Badlands of Utah by Kathryn Engle

November 2020 - Badlands of Utah

About the Image(s)

Back out on the Badlands of Utah. Taken with my Nikon Z7 with a 24mm kit lens. 1/8 sec at f/16 for the depth of field on a tripod. ISO 200. Trying to use the ridge as a leading line to the rock monument off in the distance.

Just beautiful, Kathryn. I've been to Utah so many times, I'm surprised I've never seen this spot before, one of those hidden gems! And you've caught it at perfect light, and yes the leading line does work and it all comes together so well.   Posted: 11/07/2020 17:45:30

Well pre-visualized, composed and excellently executed image, Kathryn!
The textured soil, classic of the badlands, catches my attention, while the leading line formed by the ridge let my eyes rest on the beautiful peak lit by the morning sun.
The only suggestion that I might add, would be to lighten the right side of the ridge that forms the leading line by 1/2 f-stop. I understand the image was caught at the early morning, when the contrast is low. But adding more contrast to the central part of image might bring it more 'alive'.   Posted: 11/11/2020 13:08:15

Your image is so good already, I hope my processing wouldn't ruin it.   Posted: 11/11/2020 13:19:06

Fantastic image. I love your positioning as the sunlight was low on the horizon - slightly orange color?
Wonderful capture of the textures as well as the alternances of lights and shadows.
I am wondering if this image is very slightly tilted counter-clockwise.

Wonderful detail in the textures throughout the scene. Light makes perfect your ridge line. Composition brings the entire image into play here. Spectacular image!   Posted: 11/16/2020 18:50:21

Hi Kathryn, I agree with Lamar Nix, this is indeed wonderful and spectacular image. The image is rich with leading lines, curves and textures. It has complete light range. I agree with San Yuan attempts to add some color and probably try to tweak partial white balance in some parts of the image to make more colorful and stunning. This image is an excellent base for further enhancement. Excellent shot Kathryn.

Ditto above comments. Like the pop in texture & color palette seen in San's version.   Posted: 11/27/2020 08:53:35
