Navajo - Eggshell Arch by Kathryn Engle

December 2019 - Navajo - Eggshell Arch

About the Image(s)

Taken about a week ago in the canyons of the Navajo reservation on northern Arizona. This is called the Eggshell Arch. The journey there was not for the faint of heart, but we got there in time to get the sunset as it comes through the arch. I shot this with my new Nikon Z7 mirrorless camera which I am still getting used to. I shot this at f/22 to get the starburst effect from the sun. I had a tripod and shot at 0.5 sec with a wide angle 13mm lens. ISO at base of 64. For post processing I just added contrast and DxO detail extractor for the rocks to bring out more texture. I did not add any saturation and most just was enhanced by the increased contrast.

Hi Kathryn. You have nailed this one. Well Done.Like how you have used F/22 to get the sunburst. The colours and textures are outstanding. Can't think of any improvements. I have seen lots of shots like yours but noon better. Great work. Cheers Glenn.   Posted: 12/11/2019 17:53:24

I wish I took that shot. Really beautiful. Nice angle of view, perspective, cropping, colors and starburst effect. You even preserved the details of the little bushes.
Did you consider bracketing?
This is a keeper for sure!

I did consider bracketing and did bracket many of the shots on this arch. The light and exposure was such that I didn't need to use bracketed shots on this one as all fitted in the histogram without clipping (except for the bright sun).   Posted: 12/14/2019 23:28:50

Kathryn. This is indeed awesome. To me, it's a five-star image. If you insist me room for improvement, it would only be darkening the sky ... just a bit ... not more than half stop.   Posted: 12/19/2019 15:22:30

Hi Kathryn,
I love the star burst. My only suggestion, as mentioned by Frans would be to darken the sky and it would be interesting to see if the suns rays extent upward into the sky as well.
