Street with Balloons by Kathryn Engle

August 2019 - Street with Balloons

About the Image(s)

I guess this falls under the cityscape category of our group. While walking around Baiona, Spain we came across this street with all the umbrellas. So I took a quick pic with my little Sony A6000 which I carry on my bicycle. Shot at f/9.5 , ISO 250, 16 mm focal length. I did bracket it and create an HDR and then added contrast so I could get more of the store fronts and street.

Katherine, surely a festive and lively image with all the brightly colored umbrellas! Exposure overall looks just right. Well done!   Posted: 08/07/2019 09:43:05

Hi Katherine. To me, the impact of this image is a group of colorful umbrellas at the bright end of the alley. I love how you composed the leading lines towards this Interest Area. I like the HDR Color Harmony, your Technique and the Story telling set up. I think you achieved them all. My only input is the building perspective. I would finish it off with simple straightening of the buildings. Nice shot Katherine.   Posted: 08/10/2019 20:20:33

The backlit umbrellas are quite lovely. Unfortunately many of them are not lit as they're mounted below rooftop level and the sun isn't in the proper position to illuminate them. Wish they'd used more of them to shade the sky better.

Fun image that makes me want to stroll down and explore all the shops & cafe's. Nice leading lines and balanced colorful composition. Straightening the buildings helps.   Posted: 08/12/2019 18:06:10

This is a very interesting scene with so much to look at. I like the perspective of looking straight down the street. I agree with Frans and like the buildings straight. Also, I wonder if you could brighten the individual umbrellas that are not already backlit (just a little)?   Posted: 08/14/2019 12:02:05

Gave Todd's suggestion a try in LR by brushing the unlit umbrella's with a warmer temp, increase in exposure & saturation, and opened shadows.   Posted: 08/16/2019 10:02:00

Hi Kathryn. The colours in this image really catch the eye. I love the colours and shapes in the umbrellas. The edges of the buildings really lead the viewer into the scene. The people add to the story. The paved walkway/road add interest in the foreground. There is a lot going on in this image and after the buildings led me in I wanted to explore the buildings. Like Frans my only criticism is the leaning buildings and this can easily be fixed in Lens Correction.Cheers Glenn   Posted: 08/16/2019 04:43:20

Very nice, joyful street scene. I agree with the vertical tweaking from Frans. I have to confess that I am a bit of a stickler to architecture rules unless they are broken on purpose.
Very nice travel souvenir.
Nicely done.   Posted: 08/16/2019 07:02:59
