Sunrise over Truckhaven Rocks

Taken last month in Anza Borrego State Park in Southern California. I use focus stacking and exposure blending and also in small part, my first attempt at using TK panels luminosity masking

Hi Todd. Your skills amaze me. What a beautiful image. Your focus stacking has worked well with your image sharp from front to back. The foreground creates a wonderful first impression with it's eye catching textures. The sun is well placed and the rays add impact. for me the image is a little over saturated and I took a little red out. This is very subjective and you, I'm sure prefer the image as it is. What do you think?   Posted: 03/03/2019 02:57:54

Thanks Glen, I was a bit concerned about the amount of saturation so I'll be interested in what the others think also.   Posted: 03/03/2019 14:25:47

Great capture. I agree with Glen - I would prefer a slightly less saturated version. It would also be nice to remove the grayish half circle on the upper edge of the sun. I love the very nice sun rays.
Great job. Love it. Keep on the good work. Very inspiring.   Posted: 03/08/2019 16:51:53

Thanks Pierre,
I was able to remove that dark band using a luminosity mask and a solid color adjustment layer.   Posted: 03/08/2019 22:00:29

Impressive image! The deeply scarred rocks in the immediate foreground command primal attention, and from there the eye proceeds seamlessly (without loss of sharpness) across the rocky terrace toward the sun's ascent. The cloud line at the horizion has both limited the light a bit which has produced little if any visual anomalies, and produces an interesting shadowed area in the distance as we move toward the left.
I tend to like Glen's color adjustments.   Posted: 03/11/2019 09:53:47

I love TK Panels and use them a lot. Not an easy set of PS extensions but worth it overall. There seems to be a sun with a sun shadow behind it. I wonder if eliminating the 'second' sun would be beneficial. I like Glen's idea of reducing the red a bit and let in more natural colors. Overall a great shot. Love the sun rays too.   Posted: 03/11/2019 20:39:29

Hi Todd,

I think you chose the right time and the right angle to capture this image. I like how you maintain sharpness of clouds around the sun. The sun and it's ray of lights definitely brings significant impact to me. This was my primary interest area.

I like how you set diagonal composition by postioning the sun off center on the upper right corner then include foreground on the lower left corner. I also love the image color harmony.

I suggest you create secondary interest areas to bring more impacts to this image. Impact is when the viewer is amazed, stop and continue to ponder. Interest areas serve to keep the viewer's mind from wandering around and create pleasant fixation points. I suggest you darkened most part of your fore ground. It's too brght and too crispy, to me. I suggest you just brightened and sharpened partial spots of the foreground to make your viewer curious and wondering around this area. Be mind full to maintain brightness and sharpness of the lower left corner of the foreground for diagonal composition.

I appreciate how you spend tremendous time and effort to create this image.

The foreground rocks have great color and texture providing a strong foreground. Focus stacking kept things sharp receding all the way back to a lovely sunset/sunrise.

I'm not familiar with TK Panels but feel the sky might look a bit muddy although I love the rim lighting behind the clouds and the rays raining down.

A little red goes a long way in digital photography; it's so powerful often little dabs are enough. IMO I prefer Glen's toned down version.

Looks like an interesting spot to clamber around!   Posted: 03/15/2019 21:39:46
