Frosted Winter Grass by Lamar Nix

January 2018 - Frosted Winter Grass

About the Image(s)

Sunrise over a vineyard featuring textured grass hillocks covered with a morning frost.

Captured with an EF 17-40mm, f/4L Canon lens at 17mm , 1/13 seconds on a tripod with focus in the intermediate foreground. My purpose was to select the light and shooting conditions to emphasize the texture of the grass.

For someone who loves landscape images this one ticks all the boxes. The foreground is wonderful and leads your eye to the large golden tree and then to the sun soaked smaller trees in the distance. The sun rising from the left is perfect and accentuates the evocative patterns in the grass. A beautiful autumn (Fall) scene. I find it hard to offer any improvements. Well Done! I like the light on the grass and the yellow leaved trees in the background. While it is said that your eye is drawn to the brightest spot in the image my eye seems to be drawn to the the darkest object in this image. I think the image would be improved if some of the shadow detail could be brought back in the large dark bush to the right of the dominate tree. It seemed to help me feel more comfortable with that dark bush by restoring the detail a couple of feet into the shadow on the side facing the camera. Attached is a rough representation of what I am referring to.

Thanks for pointing that out. I thought the natural shadow of that hedge provided a natural frame directing attention to the distant golden trees.   Posted: 01/16/2018 09:45:43

The light on the golden tress is just right. The direction of the grasses lead towards the trees. The shadows on the grass hillocks add dimension and make the scene very interesting. No suggestions for improvement.   Posted: 01/18/2018 12:29:36

Love the texture and gestures caught in the willy nilly grassy hillocks going all directions combined with the soft diffuse light enriching the golden leaves. Nice play between deep shadows and bright highlights. I too was drawn to the dark bush and feel it benefits from Charlie's treatment.   Posted: 01/18/2018 19:58:01
