About the Image(s)

This is another image from when the Austin area experienced a couple days of icing. Walking carefully, I took this with my Sony A7R IV, 1/250, f/8.0, ISO 100, handheld. As can be seen from the attached original, I cropped in quite a bit - that's when all those extra pixels help. I put a radial filter around the ice to increase clarity and brightness and added a bit of a vignette to the image.

Dean - Very nice image and crop. I rarely use my Sony A7RIII, much less handheld, mostly due to so much more noise than the A7III. Any suggestions? Cindy   Posted: 03/08/2023 08:12:30

Cindy,
Regarding noise, my A7RIV seems to be good at ISO 800 and below. After that, there will be noise as the ISO increases and it will be even worse in images that are dark, like night skies. Full frame cameras are generally better than those with smaller sensors and even cameras by the same manufacturer with similar sensors may be a bit different (like your A7III vs A7RIII). For landscapes, I almost always use a tripod so I can decrease the shutter speed and therefore reduce the ISO (100 is my preference, if possible). I usually don't allow the camera to select the ISO but sometimes I do when shooting sports or moving birds. And the denoise software works much better these days than a few years ago.   Posted: 03/09/2023 10:02:04

Took a while to work this one out, so thanks for including the original as a reference point. The bud is very sharp and portrays cold conditions.
I might have included a little more in the crop to give us a better perspective.   Posted: 03/10/2023 14:16:27

Yes, the crop is tight.   Posted: 03/10/2023 18:13:29

Very nice. I agree with the way you cropped the image. Despite this tight crop, you definition remains pretty good. I like it!   Posted: 03/14/2023 19:22:26

I think the tight crop is very nicely done. I think that this would work very well as a black and white photo. I am amazed by all the detail in the image. Overall I think this is a strong image and I don't think there is anything I would change.   Posted: 03/15/2023 14:21:09

I love the texture of this image. It tells an interesting story about winter in a way that is up close and unusual.

I like the original a lot too. If you wanted to you might be able to keep the original crop or play around with less cropping and maybe add a vignette to expand on the story. Very cool image!   Posted: 03/17/2023 11:25:23
