Bad Water Salt Flats by Dean Ginther

October 2020 - Bad Water Salt Flats

About the Image(s)

This is another image from my trip to the Death Valley NP last year. I had to get up before sunrise and drive about 45 minutes and then walk about a half mile on the Bad Water Salt Flats to get this image. It was taken with my Pentax K-1 with a 15-30 2.8 lens at 1/45 sec at F6.7, ISO 100 on a tripod. To the left you can just see another photographer standing in the shallow water taking a picture. I was fortunate to have a confluence of factors that allowed for this image.

Lovely, Dean! What great colors and lines. The only thing that I'm not sure about is if you want the horizon line in the middle or at 1/3 or 2/3. I'd love to hear about what everyone thinks about the horizon line. Very artful!   Posted: 10/05/2020 17:59:45

Brenda,
Usually with landscapes I don't put the horizons in the middle but with reflections I think it works well.   Posted: 10/05/2020 18:04:23

What beautiful colors, Dean. Makes it all the more worthwhile getting up so early. Your composition is also spot on. I would clone out the other photographer as I don't think he adds anything to the composition. He is too small to add scale and to me is more of a distraction.

Yes, I thought the same thing about taking him/her out.   Posted: 10/13/2020 10:41:33

Beautiful, serene, energizing, calming, fantastic...
Very nice lines, soft colors, reflection (was it from water or heat?)
I do not have any problem with the off center panoramic view. The reflection line/horizon is very suiting at half height.
I do not mind the other photographer. Could be a way to interest children in searching for it! (p.s.: I work with children all day....)   Posted: 10/16/2020 07:45:21

Textures, colours, lighting have all just got together in this shot. Although I agree with Brenda about the half way, in this case I think rules are sometimes made to be broken.   Posted: 10/17/2020 19:38:50

Dean, the colors are beautiful. The early morning sky reflecting in the salt flats along with the converging lines make the image.   Posted: 10/17/2020 19:58:57

This is an amazing photo. I also agree that I don't have a problem with the horizon line. The colors are very nice also.   Posted: 10/19/2020 13:13:10
