Badwater Salt Flats by Dean Ginther

September 2020 - Badwater Salt Flats

About the Image(s)

I took the attached photo at the Badwater Salt Flats in the Death Valley National Park last year just as the sun was rising. and lighting the mountains in the background Normally the salt flats are dry but when I was there there was a small shallow lake of about 6" of water on the salt because of recent rains. I took it with my little Sony RX-100 hand holding at F4.5, 1/200, and 34mm.

Great reflections Dean, well done nice pic. I have a similar landscape taken in New Zealand, where I lightened the shadow area. I would possible do the same to your pic, its only a suggestion.   Posted: 09/06/2020 00:37:34

I love the horizontal layers of light and dark going all the way through this landscape. Well done for getting up so early in the morning to catch this magical light! I believe you have enough detail in the shadow area, so I would not open up any more.   Posted: 09/07/2020 10:51:01

Dean, beautiful light, and how fortunate you were to have the water for the reflection. I think cropping to a panorama format was a good choice.   Posted: 09/07/2020 15:18:15

The reflection is very nicely captured. I don't believe there is anything I would change all of your edits where good choices.   Posted: 09/16/2020 08:12:36

Really nice Dean. I was in that same area early in the morning but as there was no water, there was no reflection. I love this orange light + mirror reflection. My only suggestion would be to have like a little bit more sky to bring the interface of the refection at mid height. Great photography of a rather rare event!   Posted: 09/17/2020 10:17:01

Dean, Sorry I missed this! I like it a lot, but I agree with Pierre that a bit more sky would help. I also like Geoffrey's idea of opening up the shadow on the top portion a bit. Beautiful place!   Posted: 09/20/2020 18:38:15
