I attended Adam Jones' workshop at Triple D Game Farm in Montana (the wolf and tiger I entered also were photographed here). Our first animal was this Siberian Lynx kitten, who was let loose on several acres and raced around smelling everything. It was quite a project to photograph him in focus...and in the frame! I did love this pic of him--an innocent kitten and dwarfed by two giant trees. I am unsure of the crop--I want the cat to show up, but for the viewer to know he was in the wild (sorta) and not photographed in a zoo.

Use DXO noise reduction since shooting at a high ISO. Normal Lightroom and Photoshop processing, including burning down the red leaves and desaturating the greenery around him. I did an Adam Jones trick--put the eyes on a separate layer and then lighten slightly to make them look as alive and vibrant as they do on a live animal. Successful?

Lovely capture. Maybe vignette a bit more on the left side.   Posted: 10/06/2018 18:24:20

Cropping in helped; might even do a bit closer. Nice clear capture of this moving small cat; the cat does blend in a bit -- a bit more contrast might help as well as the vignette.   Posted: 10/06/2018 20:07:44

Babies are so adorable!
I found cropping a very interesting topic. I do not think that there is necessarily a right or a wrong. In this case as this lynx was looking in front and a little to the right of the screen. Because of this, I would suggest this cropping.   Posted: 10/06/2018 20:37:01

Thanks for the cropping ideas and need for more vignetting!   Posted: 10/12/2018 20:22:55

Brenda, the kitten is so cute and innocent looking. Good job with the capture with no blurring due to movement. the eyes have wonderful personality. Personally, I would crop some from the bottom and left. This would leave enough of the wildness in the image but bring the kitten closer. The image does seem to need more contrast and a bit of lowering of the highlights. I tried Camera Raw Filter to accomplish this.   Posted: 10/13/2018 22:44:08

The eyes have it!!! Cropping has really made the shot .....Where is Mum!!! was my first thought but I realise it is a captive critter.
I recall finding 3 Bobcat kittens in Oregon one time and quickly moved on.

Nice work

I agree with Candy's crop as it shows us more detail of the cute little pussy cat, while still leaving enough background to show a natural environment. Good work on the eyes!   Posted: 10/16/2018 10:41:43

Thanks for the feedback on my Siberian lynx. I cropped in on him, as everyone suggested--and I think he gets too soft. It was a high ISO shot and hand held and my first time in manual, so I was not very stable.

I do like the crop, though. Thoughts?
