Caddo Lake by Dean Ginther

June 2018 - Caddo Lake

About the Image(s)

I recently took this picture on a sunset boat tour of Caddo Lake in East Texas. Caddo Lake is the only "natural" lake in Texas. Part of it is in Texas and part in Louisiana. The Texas side is filled with protected Bald Cypress trees growing out of the shallow water. Caddo Lake is known for its good fishing and abundant wildlife, including alligators.

In my opinion, it could be cropped to get the horizon lower in the frame. It is a wonderful scene with much drama. The bottom corners of the image is very dark and not necessarily adding to the image. You don't need all the reflection at the bottom to know that is what it is, hence cropping it does not lose the impact of the scene. Also the small branch of leaves in the upper right are not adding to the image.   Posted: 06/04/2018 16:12:14

Dean, I love your black and white image with great contrasts. Your sky is fabulous! I like both your mid-line horizon line showing the mirror look, and I also like Donna's cropped version.

I note you are 1/1600 sec and 1600 ISO. Did you need to be that fast due to the boat and water motion? There doesn't seem to be any noise in the photo.   Posted: 06/04/2018 19:59:18

Brenda,

The boat was moving about 15 mph and I was worried about getting blurred images. For this pic, the boat has slowed down so I could have lowered the shutter speed and ISO some but it worked out OK for this image.   Posted: 06/05/2018 21:46:53

Dean, this is a great image for black and white and you have converted it perfectly. I love the lines of clouds in the sky which is so beautifully reflected in the water. Your composition works well, with the tall trees on the right balanced by the row of trees in the left center. I would crop the trees extending in on the left of the frame. I don't believe that you need them for a stop in that part of the image.   Posted: 06/11/2018 12:46:34

Dean, you have presented a beautiful black and white image. The sky is stunning, and the reflections of the sky and trees complete the image. I too feel that the trees on the left could be cropped as they are not really adding anything. the horizon line does not bother me.   Posted: 06/12/2018 16:10:55

I love this pic and I think it stands as is, or with the left crop or the crops that Donna suggested. Thanks for your explanation of your boat speed--I think it was smart to shoot with a fast ISO.   Posted: 06/20/2018 18:28:13
