Seal Lion by Rob Lawrence

January 2018 - Seal Lion

About the Image(s)

Seal Lion coming ashore on a place where I was sitting ...Catlins, New Zealand near Point Slope, the most southern point in NZ
This guy had been feeding on Ling Cod earlier and I was set up on the beach to view that. He disappeared and I trounced my attention to a Varied Oystercatcher only to look back at the beach and see him swimming at where I was set up. Da Da Dun ta. Entered my head and this critter can go on Land. I started clicking some shot as it moved close (he Looked a lot bigger through the Lens). I moved and He came out of water and onto the beach. A bit spooky but amazing.

ISO 360 550mm f22 1/250 VR off as it was on a tripod

Rob,

I have been in this same area on my last trip to NZ. There is a lot going on in this picture. I might crop in a bit more on the face and eyes of the sea lion but I also appreciate the context the water and vegetation provide.   Posted: 01/08/2018 12:09:00

They say the more we practice, the luckier we get! You captured this sea lion in an unusual pose and like Pierre's squirrel, also appears to be at your eye level. I like Deans crop as I also found the brown object on the right to draw my eye. I would even crop a little more from the right to concentrate on the face.   Posted: 01/11/2018 12:38:37

Personally, I prefer laying on my belly in the snow instead of sand or water!   Posted: 01/17/2018 16:01:55

The crop is more pleasing in my opinion as well. One thing very nicely done is the sheet of water over the back of the sea lion as it surfaces. This is an interesting capture.   Posted: 01/11/2018 20:38:34

Nice perspective on your sea lion, Rob-looking straight at the nose. I do agree that the crop is an improvement-too much distracting in the original.   Posted: 01/13/2018 21:36:34

Thanks All. I se what you mean the cropping reduction of distracting "clutter"   Posted: 01/15/2018 08:07:13

Nice capture - interesting subject! Nice juxtaposition of textures (water, vegetation and the fur). Excellent focus and depth of field.
Great work!   Posted: 01/17/2018 16:05:29

How did I miss commenting on this earlier? Maybe it came in late as I was early on my comments? Sorry! I agree the crop moves this into a wonderful capture. The face details are a bit difficult to discern on my screen, maybe selectively open the shadows around his eyes a touch so we see those huge eyes staring at us? Sweet capture!   Posted: 01/25/2018 11:44:38
