Green Heron by Pierre Williot

July 2017 - Green Heron

About the Image(s)

Equipment: Canon EOS 5DSr, Canon EF 600 mm f/4, Canon 1.4X Tele converter, Gitzo tripod with Gimbal head.
Setting: ISO 1600, 840 mm, f/8.0, 1/5000 sec (+1 due to very bright background). Cropping and light adjustments in Lightroom. I also removed a small branch that was not touching the bird.

This Green Heron was perched very high on a dead tree, observing the pond below.

The colors of the green heron are perfect. The diagonal branch anchors the image and provides interest. I do feel that the bird is not as sharp as it should be, and the image is a bit stagnant. Usually, there should be some kind of action such as looking down into the water for a fish or other meal.   Posted: 07/12/2017 13:45:55

The feathers are my favorite part, beautiful lines within the feathers, and nicely in focus. I have to agree with Candy that around the eye is a bit soft and the pic needs something extra to make it a true winner. The sky seems a bit noisy?
That being said, I think you've done a nice job with keeping your processing modest and getting a lovely capture, especially at 840 nm!!!   Posted: 07/12/2017 19:08:59

Green herons are a favourite bird of North America. Long range shot and I agree the head is a bit soft. however the color and feathers are amazing. I suspect he maybe focused on you as you focus on him or she or it. Hard to distinguish gender with this species. cheers   Posted: 07/13/2017 11:15:04

I love watching Green Herons here in South Florida. They are usually low down in the branches near the water as they fish and not easy to isolate. So you have done well to capture this one higher up and against a clear blue sky.   Posted: 07/13/2017 12:56:49
