About the Image(s)

I've always had a problem with most stereo cameras, due to the limitations of a fixed lens base. In order to shoot very close subjects, sequential shooting was the best option, which has its own problems with misalignment, movement, etc. A few years ago, the company Red Digital Cinema (makers of professional stereoscopic movie equipment) decided to make a 3D smartphone. The phone was terrible, but the cameras in it were high quality and high resolution (2x 12mp). The base price for the Red Hydrogen 1 was $1300, so I didn't think much about it after the initial buzz and bad reviews. A couple months ago, I learned that used Red Hydrogen 1 phones are available on ebay for under $200 so I did some bidding and got one for $104. The biggest problem as usual is the close lens base. But unlike most stereo cameras, it can focus extremely close, making it great for near macro to portrait range shots. For reference, my dog has a 6 foot leash. I shot her from the leash hand, and nearly the whole leash was clear, but the depth fell off just beyond the dog. It also has a pair of 'selfie' cameras, which are only a couple of centimeters apart but still quite effective.
Here is an image of some roses, from about 6 inches.

Very beautiful red flowers. For a 12MP image it's a little soft in focus or maybe it's soft because this image is a lot smaller than 12Mp. Your Red Hydrogen 1 does real good at such close ups.   Posted: 09/07/2020 16:32:24

Steve, The flowers are very nice. However, I think the camera lost some texture that is needed in these flowers. Maybe it was the lighting that was used. I will have to take a look at the Red Hydrogen 1 camera.   Posted: 09/12/2020 14:03:31

Beautiful red flowers. The 3D sepation of the petals are good. The image lacks sharpness and lighting is harsh. Part of this problem can be sloved in Photoshop. I tried a quick one with adjustments in exposure, noice reduction and unsharp mask. The resulting image is given below (Parellel view)   Posted: 09/13/2020 13:12:08

An excellent stereo of the flower heads but as an interesting image I find it uninteresting and it is only the stereo effect that is excellent.   Posted: 09/22/2020 15:13:19
