About the Image(s)

Damsel Fly

In my recent monsoon trip to one of the Indian rain forests for macro shoot, I had a chance to click this beautiful and colorful Damsel Fly. It was resting on a wet leaf and then moved to this artistic dry vine.
After 3-4 months of lock down, courtesy Covid19 pandemic, I was desperately waiting to get lost in nature and it worked well :-)
Could see few other colorful critters which I will post in future postings.

Nikon gears:
Nikon Z50, Nikkor 105mm macro lens with FTZ adaptor, External flash Godox v860ii

Exif:
1/200, f14, ISO100, Center Weighted Average metering

I think I have seen more insect images this year than in my entire life!! I hear you joy in being able to get out again and your efforts were rewarded with a fine image.
The little trick of using a flash for a shot like this certainly does wonders for backgrounds and in this case the black adds a touch of drama to the wings.

I think the dry vine is a better prop than a leaf would have been. The sort of golden tones in the vine compliment the tones in the wings. I would like to suggest a bit of a more panoramic crop however. In that the damsel fly and the upper part of the branch are quite sharp and the lower part is such a mess I would just eliminate it. Check out my crop suggest that is attached. This is a quite nice image.   Posted: 09/11/2020 12:03:42

I am no expert at Macro photography although I have been giving it some study time. I am a fan of the elimination of distractions in a photo and with the black background you have really taken care of that issue. Now give it the crop that Larry did and you have a winner. With having that nice black background it really makes everything including that out of focus branch really standout and draws the viewers eye right to it.

That is such a beautiful image! In a natural appearing setting I would have reduced the contrast a bit, but with that black background the contrast really works. This is one to print and frame.   Posted: 09/18/2020 18:11:04
