About the Image(s)

The whole concept here was darkness, intrigue and wonderment about what you are seeing. In reality, it's a lady that came out to a field of sunflowers in bright sun dressed in a somewhat formal, long dress. The rest of us were in jeans, shorts and sports shirts. She sure seemed out of place, and of course merited...a few frames of infrared! In post processing, I've used all kinds of plug-ins and masks to create what I hope is an eerie mood surrounding the figure as she walks through the flowers. In your critiques, you can let me know if you think I've been successful in the effort. I'm happy to say...this was taken during Covid-19, October actually, and I was outside but wearing a mask and moving very gingerly around everyone to take my photographs.

I love stopping to enjoy sunflower fields also, Gary, and you've got a nice scene here, even before you took it in another direction.

It certainly is eerie, and no doubt it wows the viewer. Probably no surprise here, but for me, I think a lighter hand on the effect might work better. In particular, I wish the halo around her were less bright, or perhaps removed altogether, so that just the woman is illuminated, and even then perhaps a bit less bright. On the other hand, the bits of light on the leaves, especially to the right, work very well. I applaud the creativity, it's fun seeing what the photographer was envisioning when he took the image!   Posted: 01/03/2021 15:37:49

Happy New Year Jack...and thanks for your critique. We'll have to agree to disagree on this one as I created the aura and effect I was looking for. I sincerely appreciate your view of it, however, and reminding me we don't all see the world the same way! You and I have two different ways to depict the IR scene...and neither is always right or always wrong. Thanks again for the explanation.   Posted: 01/04/2021 08:13:52

This is an amazing image. It is haunting, mystical, creative....

I think the glow around the lady is part of the aura that sells the eerie overall image. I applaud you for masterful work

2021 will be a better year

Hi Gary
My first impression "WOW". The more I look at it, the more it draws on me.
Your creativity in IR rendering is something to be admired ... different approach each month which makes it all the more interesting.
I know it was your way of creating an eerie mood, but would you possibly consider reducing the highlights on the dress just a touch!
A wonderful image all the same !!   Posted: 01/06/2021 01:15:01

Gary if you were aspiring to achieve a spooky, eerie image, you succeeded. So interesting! And I think such an image is best done in IR. Your post-processing work is top notch. To geld the lily, however, I agree with Jack about the intensity of the halo. Just a slight adjustment will keep things ghostly without too much luminosity.   Posted: 01/06/2021 10:55:23

Thanks Charles...your thoughts echo several of our other members. I'll go back to the drawing board and see what I think of reduction in the halo.   Posted: 01/06/2021 11:18:11

Hi Gary, I find this an exciting image. The cold, blue tones just work so well. The conversion of the sunflower field with subtle highlighted areas is lovely. I think you were aiming to highlight a pathway for your ethereal lady, but for me it is too bright. The model's ghostly appearance works wonderfully, but I would like the aura and path to fade away so that she stands out a little more. Love that Sky!   Posted: 01/09/2021 10:41:59
