Inside the Grain Elevator by Jack Florence Jr

August 2020 - Inside the Grain Elevator

About the Image(s)

Something different for me — This is a peek inside one of the grain elevators of the Palouse. I attempted to add interest by using the light coming in from the top of the tank as a bit of a ring - let me know if that works for you. ISO 3200 f2 1/8, 28mm. Original not included, as they are indistinguishable

Good eye and creative composition. I had to read your writeup to understand what was producing the halo. It is interesting that the individual slats that form the silo dome are visible in your shot. The shovel is a nice prop and makes your shot work

Something different from you, Jack. Its abstract nature also appeals to me. Intriguing halo makes the picture for me. Nicely rendered!   Posted: 08/03/2020 03:17:18

Jack,
As you say something different and unexpected, certainly in IR. The circle of light is marvelous and of course makes the simple image interesting. I do think that darkening the grain base will make the spade pop as right now the tones are so similar. Either way, I am enjoying it.   Posted: 08/08/2020 09:51:53

Jack, I really like the simplicity of this image, and more so, your creative insight to see it and capture it. There is not much you can do about it, but the shovel seems too much like a plastic toy to me. My eye wants something old, worn, and rusty.   Posted: 08/12/2020 20:19:26

Jack, This is quite a different image than I normally see from you and it definitely piqued my interest. The composition is held together by the handle of the shovel and there is detail on both the top and bottom of the image. For me I wish the shovel was sharp throughout to help it stand out more visually. Was this taken with a 720 nm filter?   Posted: 08/17/2020 20:42:17

Thanks, John, it's the 830 nm conversion.
Good point about the lack of sharpness throughout (and Charles comment about the toy shovel also). Being hand held in such low light necessitated a very shallow dof, which resulted in such a narrow zone of sharpness.   Posted: 08/17/2020 20:53:28

Is your camera converted to 830 nm or can you use other filters on the lens?   Posted: 08/17/2020 20:56:53
