About the Image(s)

I remember the first International Salon I judged in the 1980’s (dating myself I guess), Peggy’s Cove came up a number of times. We had just recently arrived in the United States and this was the first time I had ever seen this iconic subject. I was enthralled and gave most pretty good scores. My fellow judges were less impressed as this was seen as such a common subject and gave far lower scores. I’m still intrigued and was thrilled to be able photograph this lighthouse myself. Even so, I think the makers of those slides I judged did a far better job.
It was impossible to take the picture without the many tourist that were there. I hope you do not find them intrusive. Rather than going for a pool reflection, I liked the rocks as well as the curve of the ocean bringing my eye towards the lighthouse, as well as showing environment.
Converted using levels to brighten, as well as contrast. Taken into Silver Efex , using local adjustments to lighten and darken. Topaz de noise Al and Topaz sharpen Al were both used.
Canon 20 D, ISO 200. 28 mm, F11

Nicely composed and laid out, Melanie. I too like the curve in the rocks, as well as the placement of the lighthouse, and the strip of clouds. The clouds are too bright for me, though. Looking at the original I can see that they weren't blown out (which is often the case) so you can dial it back a bit if you agree. Although it's perhaps in need of some contrast, I actually prefer the exposure in the original overall.
I've darkened the sky just a bit:   Posted: 10/06/2019 13:39:51

A great scene Meline, which you have composed beautifully. Perhaps a little contrasty for my liking ... but then that's the way you preferred.
I was wondering if you'd possibly consider the attached version of your Lighthouse as an alternative!!!

Hi Jack and Palli
Both your versions are better than mine. I think I was in such a hurry to get the image up that to be honest I did not notice the blown out clouds. Spent the time lightening the lighthouse. Really appreciate the critique   Posted: 10/07/2019 10:46:39

Hi Peggy,

A wonderful scene...a place I've not had the benefit of visiting. My only suggestion is the need I feel for more detail and less lightness and contrast in the clouds. Otherwise, I think you've got all the elements for a fine photograph.   Posted: 10/07/2019 07:09:18

Melanie,

I like your choice of camera angle for Peggy's Cove. The rocky shoreline with its shape and detail set the base for your scene. The cloud band is perfect. I agree with the inputs to you from our team, they will put this shot over the top.
