This image is a 3 bracket shot of the Palouse region in Eastern Washington
State and Western Idaho. The HDR function in LightRoom was used to bring the three images together. It was processed using the PhotoShop Raw Module and then Nik Silver Efx Pro. Not many other adjustments done to the image.
Cropped to a 16:9 ratio to emphasize the rolling hills, the stream cutting through the field and to include the three elements: the foreground with the barley, the rolling hills in the middle ground and the sky as the background.
Any thoughts on processing or composition would be most welcome. Cheers!

Hi Ernie...

ART! I mean that. I really like the vision you have displayed here. Very unusual way to portray the Palouse from the normal. Well done. Two things I tried...totally subjective treatments...1) Used Detail Extractor in NIK Color Efex Pro to give a bit more delineation of the shadow areas along with Darken/Lighten Center to burn corners and 2) took out the foreground grasses, which to my eye weren't adding value to the composition. The mood of this image is superior!   Posted: 06/03/2018 18:29:17

Hi Ernie
I like the play of light on rolling hills + the foreground. In my view they help create a dramatic effect. Row of clouds give an added depth. Full marks!

The above comments were written prior to reading Gary's comments. I too like his approach, composition and overall effect creating another dramatic picture!   Posted: 06/04/2018 00:09:38

Hi Ernie,
Love that you are also doing HDR this month.
Let's start with the sky. It is absolutely gorgeous. Exactly what we wish for in a scenic rendition. The textures and graphic nature of the scene make it tactile. I want to touch! The ray of light captures a perfect center of interest. I know the grass gives a base to the image, and artists choice to leave it in, but from a graphic point of view, it seems stronger without it. Small quibble, I would like to see a touch more contrast.   Posted: 06/10/2018 11:43:31

The Palouse is one of my favorite places to shoot, and this is lovely Ernie. I'm also a big fan of capturing sun flecks on days like this, and being ready and executing is not easy. As has been said, the result is a unique and artistic image. I like that the sky is understated -- too much contrast there can easily take away from the beautiful subject of the landscape. I do agree with the others, that the image might be stronger without the grass.   Posted: 06/10/2018 12:42:36

Thank you all for the kind words and excellent feedback. Thank you Gary for the suggestions and example. I am torn with removing the barley in the foreground, but after playing with the image I can see that leaving it out strengthens the overall image and actually anchors it better. Thank you for pushing me outside the comfort zone :).   Posted: 06/18/2018 17:41:30
