Waiting For The Parade by Peter Newman

September 2020 - Waiting For The Parade

About the Image(s)

When I go to events, I look for interesting spectators. I was waiting for the Chinese New Years Parade, together with some members of my Camera Club, when I saw this young lady all bundled up. I thought that the reflection in her sunglasses was interesting. (I’m the guy with the camera.) She agreed to let me take the picture. In post I just cropped to a square image, did some sharpening and NR using Topaz plugins, and made small adjustments in levels and Hue/Saturation.

Here I used my Nikon D300, Nikon 70-200mm @ 90mm (1/15 sec, f/11, ISO 800).

I like the tight square crop to emphasize the subject and remove any unnecessary distractions. The colorful mask and the sharp focus of the hair really capture my attention. To me, the reflection in the glasses is very interesting. I get the feeling that I am looking at what is going on at the parade through the eyes of the girl. Well done.   Posted: 09/10/2020 21:15:20

Thank you for your comments, Jeff. At one point I was toying with just showing the reflection in her glasses, but decided against it.   Posted: 09/12/2020 15:04:51

Yes, you can see the whole world in reflections...and your friends are having lots of fun. When I first see the mask it reminds me of a pacifier..LOL !!
A very successful image that show festivity and a wonderful world. The crop and placement of the glasses are perfect .   Posted: 09/12/2020 15:02:16

So I'm going to be the outlier here...

This is a great image and I really like the mask. It does look like a pacifier! But I'm not a fan of all the activity in the reflection. I like the reflections, (and I knew that was you), but maybe the crowd on the right hand side in the stands could be toned down. I find the white component in the sunglasses a bit of a distraction. The sharpness of her hair, coat fur and weave in the mask is great.   Posted: 09/22/2020 22:37:20
