A Yellow Mushroom by Lynne Hollingsworth

December 2019 - A Yellow Mushroom

About the Image(s)

One morning last week I saw this little yellow mushroom under an oak tree in my front yard. Once the sun came out I knew that would be the end of the mushroom, so I brought out a tarp, a diffuser, a small tabletop tripod and my camera. On the ground I went and spent the next hour taking images. The mushroom was only 4 inches high and lasted about 3 hours after appearing.

When taking the image I placed the diffuser on the left to help diffuse the early morning sun. Time of day was about 7am, but the sun remains strong in Florida, even in December. The colors, textures and oversized top compared to the stem really drew me in. Also knowing that the little mushroom wouldn't be there very long, I felt compelled to give it some notoriety. The background is dark mulch so I was pleased there were no distracting elements. As always I'm interested in everyone's thoughts, particularly if you feel this image has appropriate balance and whether a center composition would work better

Lynne, If I spent several hours in the ground shooting a mushroom, most of my time would be spent trying to get up.
I like the color contrast and the positioning of the mushroom.
The white spots an clarity try to draw my eyes away from that colorful shroom. I think that if the background was darer an more blurry the mushroom would stand out more

Peter, I went back and forth trying to determine what type of background would be best - one where I gave the little shroom context vs. a dark background that isolated him. I agree that the dark background works.   Posted: 12/24/2019 07:36:52

Love the yellow mushroom.
I think that the background is just right in tone.
There is no right or wrong in what the background should look like. It is the matter of artistic choices. The background as is look more natural but a darker background is a more artsy choice.
Like the leading line created by the wood at the base and the little ( acorn ? )
The stem of the mushroom is in the right third so it is a good position. Another thought would be to crop the top down a bit so that the top part of the mushroom cap touch the intersection of the third lines.
I really enjoy seeing the detail of the yellow fungus.

Thank you Angela. I liked this little guy and made sure I left the tiny acorn in intentionally. The image seemed more static without it.   Posted: 12/27/2019 14:58:06
