Wet Dahlia by Peter Newman

December 2019 - Wet Dahlia

About the Image(s)

I went to shoot on a rainy day, with no particular plans, and wound up in a dahlia garden. To me the back part of the flower has a beauty of its own, and I liked the way the natural raindrops refracted the portion of the flower. I used my Nikon 70-200mm lens @ 200mm, at f11, with a 14mm extension tube. That lens has a nice bokeh, and the extension tube allows me to get closer. After looking at the image, I wonder if I should have used a smaller aperture, to increase the depth of field. While I like a bit of blur, do you think the petals are too soft.

I would like to add a word. The garden I was in was for competition dahlias. They have requested that we do not squirt the plants with water or glycerin, because it could have an adverse effect on the petal color. I cannot say whether that is true or not, but since I shoot in their garden I respect their request.

I envy you for seeing such beauty in our snow covered winter.
Love the rich color and alternate view of the back of the bloom. I like this view very much too.
The depth of field is fine for me.
When I made my first focus stacked bloom a very good friend of mine said that it is a specimen piece. The shallower depth of field looks more artsy to me.
The natural rain drop really enhance the look too.   Posted: 12/27/2019 14:55:35

The colors are very dynamic and the way you handled the background is nicely done. As for the petals, I do think they're a bit too soft, particularly on the upper left & upper right sections of the flower. There's also a halo effect on the 2 petals.

You're right about the Nikon 70-200mm lens having a nice bokeh. I own the same lens. I've never used an extension tube with this lens - it's an interesting idea.   Posted: 12/27/2019 15:27:43
