The Mira Building, San Francisco by Helen Sweet

March 2023 - The Mira Building, San Francisco

About the Image(s)

By Studio Gang Architects, the firm of award winning architect Jeanne Gang, the 39 story Mira Building was completed in 2020. Its twisted design enables each of the 392 condos to have a bay window. 40% of the units are sold at below market rate while the top units are priced around $5 million. Shot with my Sony 6300 and 18 to 200 lens at 18mm, f/22, 1/60 sec.

Wow! I wouldn't like to live there (even if I could afford it), but the building is exciting, and your capture is spectacular. Very well done.

The picture pulls your eye to the top of course, where the building gets a little darker. I wonder if dodging the top darker area might help with this effect and add to the grandeur?   Posted: 03/08/2023 02:29:25

Thank you, Stuart. Good observation. I'll try dodging it.   Posted: 03/08/2023 12:52:34

A very impressive structure! I agree with Stuart that some selective dodging at the top may help to bring out features of the structure.   Posted: 03/10/2023 10:37:12

OMG, the structure is amazing and your composition allows us to see and feel it all. Your POV that allows tonal variation between the sunlit side and the indirectly lit side is just right. Nicely done.

Great impact with excellent tonal range and the dark background accentuates the shape and the graphic aspect and keeps the image simple. I am not so sure about dodging the top as the middle areas reveal what is going on and if too light at the top the viewer may keep going up and out of frame. I think the darkness up there pulls the viewer back to where the best graphical features are.   Posted: 03/11/2023 22:51:47

Thank you, Chris. I'm now leaning toward your viewpoint on dodging the top.   Posted: 03/27/2023 01:32:23
