About the Image(s)

A few weeks ago, I went for a 5 hour road trip to see farm country in Central Virginia, United States. On the way, about 20 miles from my home along route 33, there is this small vintage rural courthouse in Louisa Virginia. I used my Nikon Z6 Mirrorless with 24-70mm in Portrait mode, ISO 400 (Handheld), 1/320s, f/13, using Lightroom for initial tonal enhancements (including lens correction and crop) of the color version and then converted the image to Monochrome with DxO Nik Silver Efex Pro.
The enhanced color version is offered for comparison.

A nice capture of the old courthouse. I might try darkening the bushes, trees on either side of building plus the grass to make the courthouse stand out more.   Posted: 09/07/2020 09:43:06

A beautiful image captured with perfect symetry which is fitting for this image.I like the tones achieved in the conversion. All picture elements stand out from each other, and a good range of tones is included. I am glad you included the original color version because it makes it clear how the monochrome conversion enhanced the details in the clouds. I don't have any problem with the tones of the trees on either side, but perhaps doing something to make the structures on either side less obvious would help hold the eye on the subject.   Posted: 09/09/2020 04:15:42

Nicely framed. I like the symmetry of the courthouse building. The monochrome version brings out the shadow patterns on the building. Whether intended or not, the shadow from what looks like a flag on the brick walkway is consonant with the theme of the courthouse. As always in your photographs, the focus is superb.

I think it's an attractive photo too, and would echo those comments. My only additional observation is that for me, the top of the stone sentry box and the lintel on the porch are a bit too close, making it a bit difficult to understand at first glance.   Posted: 09/11/2020 15:03:28

I like both images very much, but I have a minor suggestion.

I would prefer to see a slightly different composition that would separate the monument from the building for my eye.   Posted: 09/14/2020 15:52:39
