Morning after the Storm by Jerry Snyder

June 2020 - Morning after the Storm

About the Image(s)

The image was taken in Yosemite on the morning after an intense thunderstorm. The moisture was rising off the mountains like white smoke and the sun glinted off the wet rocks. The monochrome conversion looks much like the color original because there wasn’t much color in the scene. Half Dome can be seen in the background. The vantage point was Cooks Meadow. The exposure settings were f/8, ISO 100, 1/125 sec on a tripod-mounted 50D at 31mm FL. I enhanced the exposure and contrast in Lightroom with the adjustment brush.

I think you captured the mood as you intended with the miDdle ground mountain and cloud emphasized. I didn't recognize Half Dome because it lacks contrast, but I don't think that's important in this case. A slight stroke may have contributed to it.   Posted: 06/09/2020 14:54:26

A beautiful yet unusual view of Yosemite. Obvious what it is to anyone who has been there, but yet very unique. I really like the tones of the rocks on the left and just enough of half dome to make it obvious where it was taken. Nice shot and an excellent mono conversion.   Posted: 06/09/2020 21:55:54

I like the different levels that you captured with the very defined trees in the foreground, the sharp features of the rock face and then a cloud separating Half Dome in the rear.
The lighting worked out well.   Posted: 06/10/2020 11:15:31

I like your image a lot Jerry. It is a very different perspective and tonally works very well. Well done!   Posted: 06/10/2020 11:54:57

I'm not familiar with the scene as you all seem to be, so I see it with fresh eyes. I think it's great and would happily hang it on my wall.   Posted: 06/11/2020 17:02:33

That rock in the background even from this view is iconic to anyone that has visited Yosemite, one of the most beautiful National Parks in the USA. The classic view is from Glacier Point which looks down 3000 feet into the valley and across the valley is this rock, Half Dome. The geology of this area created a number of these domes, but this one appears to of split and 1/2 of it collapsed into the valley creating this very unique mountain.   Posted: 06/14/2020 17:13:53
