About the Image(s)

My monochrome image for January is attached along with the original. The image was taken at Saint Andrews Bay on South Georgia Island. There was a congregation of King Penguin chicks that were backlit in the sun.

I lowered the exposure to emphasize the shapes of the rim light around the birds created by their downy feathers. I tried several exposure compensations starting with minus 1 through minus 3. I liked the effect of minus 2 stops the best.

The image was taken with a tripod mounted Canon 6D 1/1600 s, f/14, ISO500, at 320 mm.

I think you have captured a beautiful image. The rim light is perfect. I'd like to change the composition by cropping the top and left to force my eye to focus on the rock and 2 birds.   Posted: 01/08/2020 21:43:37

I like the composition, but especially the original that almost has a sepia tone to it.   Posted: 01/09/2020 13:54:51

Jerry, I like the image composition that leads my eye up through the large number of King Penquin Chicks. There is an interesting feel with the chicks backlit as they are, yet, my eye wants to see just a little more. Perhaps you could see what opening up the shadows might do. Mind me, not much, just a tad. Jerry Funk's idea about cropping the top some has merit, I think for an alternative view point since the top 10% of the image doesn't add anything to your story. Your depth of field is very, very nice and your image makes me so much want to get over my cold and grab a ticket to fly to this far away place and see the birds. With that in mind, I guess you accomplished your goal to grab my interest.   Posted: 01/10/2020 07:42:33

Here is an edited version with lighter shadows and cropped at the top. Although the darker version is closer to what I envisioned when I saw the scene, I like the adjusted version as well.   Posted: 01/12/2020 12:45:02

This is what I was intending to suggest.   Posted: 01/17/2020 10:00:33

Here's a version cropping to highlight the two lucky chicks on top of the rock as Jerry Funk suggested.   Posted: 01/12/2020 12:46:18

I think all of these versions have charm. For my two penn'orth, I would go for the -2 stops, "sepia" (juvenile feathers, I presume), cropped from the left to just remove the rock which is slightly showing in your last crop, but with more height to give a square result. Street photography! As JF said, "beautiful".   Posted: 01/13/2020 15:40:55

Very interesting nature shot with the birds forming some repeat pattern and then the break in patter by the two perched on top of the rock. Suggest to crop out some portion from the top as illustrated in the second example here. Good light and atmosphere.   Posted: 01/19/2020 07:21:54

There are a couple of penguins on the rock in the foreground that might be considered by some to be a center of interest, but I think this is one of those rare images that the entire pattern becomes the center of interest. I like it the way it is, but I think it might be improved by cropping down from the top to eliminate the area in the upper middle that lacks the pattern.   Posted: 01/29/2020 22:34:18
