Reflections in BW by Jerry Snyder

December 2019 - Reflections in BW

About the Image(s)

My monochrome image for December 2018 titled Reflections in BW is attached. The photograph was taken on a cold rainy December night in Jerusalem. The streets were still bustling at 10:30. The original image doesn’t have much color so the BW conversion accurately reflects the mood. Some contrast and exposure adjustments were made in Lightroom by adjusting the color channels after converting to monochrome. The camera was a Sony a6000 with exposure settings 1/15 s, f/13, ISO 6400.

Jerry, hand down, one of the nicest night time rainy scenes I have seen. I feel I am there. The tone is just right (dark to light) and the silhouettes are very nice.

Excellent image.   Posted: 12/10/2019 14:22:55

I like the leading lines provided by the tracks and you have captured the street lights with just the correct amount of brightness, so as not to be distracting. The people are remarkably sharp for a shot at 1/15 sec.   Posted: 12/11/2019 13:39:19

Good observation about the shutter speed. The Sony has a Scene Mode called Anti-Motion Blur. It fires three or four shots and combines them in camera to create the sharpest possible image. That's the mode I used to take this photograph. Thank you for your comments.   Posted: 12/12/2019 17:12:21

Very interesting composition, but what most jumps out as me is the contrast between the street and the misty looking buildings with the walkers adding interest. Excellent!   Posted: 12/12/2019 01:29:44

Yes, a very attractive photo. I initially wondered if cropping a lot from the bottom would help as all the action is in the top half, but on hiding it with my hand I realised that the wet, reflective street is a big part of the picture and it's better uncropped. I would however remove the bright reflection in the pool at the front edge. Actually I think that cropping the bottom to just remove that bright reflection is the best solution for me.   Posted: 12/18/2019 14:23:49

The rain made the picture come alive, and yes, I think this is an excellent monochrome. These street reflections beg the question of how much of the street to show. This one might be improved a bit if you cropped from the bottom at least enough to remove the bright spot near the bottom, but perhaps up to the point where the first rail on the right gets near the lower right corner. In any case, an excellent image.   Posted: 12/26/2019 15:03:55

Stan: Here is a cropped version. The crop off the bottom made the image close to square so I made a square crop. I like the effect and agree that removing the bright reflection at the bottom improves the image. Thanks for your comments.   Posted: 12/28/2019 08:06:49

I liked this excellent moody image with all the water reflection on the street, the track leading to the couple, the distant street light...

Good Story telling image you have here.

Wishing you and your family a Happy New Year.   Posted: 12/31/2019 05:36:25
