Dhobi Ghat by Abhijeet Banerjee, PPSA

October 2018 - Dhobi Ghat

About the Image(s)

This week, I am sending across an image I have titled as “Dhobi Ghat” “ which means a place where washer men wash cloths here in India.

It is a photo walk arranged by local club of city I live in. Topics covered were daily mundane activities in and around the bank of river Brahmaputra. We came across these two fellows washing their cloths. I have taken this image using a Nikon D5300 with Nikkor 24-120mm f4. Settings were f/8, 1/2000sec, ISO-400, FL-46mm and handheld. For post processing, I have used LR-Classic CC with NIK Silver Efex Pro 2. For the overall mood, I decided to process the image in monochrome. Done some tonal and exposure adjustments. Used Graduated filter tool for some drama in the sky.

This image is nicely focused throughout. The texture of the water surface is very interesting to me. I think the image would be more dynamic if you caught the workers as the clothing splashed against the wash boards.   Posted: 10/09/2018 19:45:48

I thought about commenting that the image would improve if the clothes did not intersect the lines of the shore behind, but the camera is about at their eye level as it probably should be, so this is probably as it should be. Then I read Jerry's comment and the cloths striking the boards would prevent the intersect with the shore. This is the kind of shot you want to blaze away at 8 frames per second or so and select what works best. I like the image, but there might be others that are better.

Comment on NIK Silver Efex 2. DxO has released their "supported" version, but I have it and see no reason to go to it if you have the previous NIK or Google versions. Tim Grey is saying that you should not download the trial version if you have a previous version, because the previous version will no longer work and you will need to pay the $50 or whatever and have basically the same thing. I needed to upgrade because I did not want to give a presentation with unsupported software.   Posted: 10/10/2018 12:25:39

Abhijeet, I like your image a lot. The clarity, sharpness composition, tonality and moment of capture is so nicely dynamic and interesting in telling the story. I like also the ripples of water to enhance the image. Well done.   Posted: 10/15/2018 19:38:41

I think this is an excellent image, and I also need to be reminded to shoot action continuously rather than single frames. I made a tight crop of the man on the left and find that very expressive.   Posted: 10/17/2018 18:18:01

I have taken some continuous shots. But in the results, I am not able to freeze the frames to my liking. Movement of cloths were not in harmony.   Posted: 10/26/2018 05:27:07

I like the action of the two individuals. The water needs to be darker to contrast the individuals and make them stand out. The lighter tones tend to merge together.   Posted: 10/18/2018 10:24:21

There's a lot to like in this picture for me. The ripples and clouds frame the subject well. Contrast and clarity are super. There is bags of depth yet the subject is so clear and distinct. Very enjoyable.

I do agree with the "decisive moment" comments. For me, ideal would have been one man's clothing held aloft as shown, and the other one splashing into the water. So yes, sequential shooting might have got a more interesting frame.

I would suggest a little more cropping or some cloning out on the left as there are a few artifacts on the very edge of the bottom left that are distracting to me.   Posted: 10/19/2018 01:34:33
