Hi Barbara,
I'm a bit put off by the lack more focus on the deep items. You have the tools with a great camera and lens. I'd take about six images at different levels of focus and then combine them with some program such as Helicon focus (trial is free and its simple to use) or Photoshop. The large open space on upper right is a problem.   Posted: 02/18/2021 16:34:02

Hi Neal
I would like to master focus stacking. I have tried using a focus rail. Also I tried to focus stack images in this camera. Actually that is the reason I purchased the D850. Yes I tried Helicon Focus and it is very easy to use, but I really find it difficult to capture a good stack in the camera. Your images are always incredibly sharp and I am always impressed. I will continue to try. Thank you for your suggestions.   Posted: 02/18/2021 19:05:43

Hi Barbara,
Let me see if I can help. The focus ring on the camera lens is incredibly gross in it movements. When I stack from the camera on a tripod, I try to get 10 images, always with just a smiggin of a movement. Likewise for the focusing rail, also on a tripod. I rarely move it more than one mm for each exposure. Some of my best images are from the camera itself.
Rigidity, minuscule movement, and a cable release. Excess images do not destroy the final result.   Posted: 02/22/2021 17:36:05

Hi Neal,
Thank you,I appreciate your help. I'm going out to buy some flowers and practice. You have given me good advice and encouraged me to try harder. Hopefully next month's image will be improved.

Hi Barbara: Neal makes really good points, no reason for me to repeat them. I also have a D850 and it has some sort of a program built in for focus stacking purpose. Just purchased the camera body and have yet to try out its capabilities for this process, but will soon.   Posted: 02/23/2021 23:36:24
