About the Image(s)

This is my first attempt at applying a texture to an image. My plan is to learn more about applying layer masks for more dramatic images in the future.

How I Did It: For some time I have been interested using textures and masks to enhance some of my floral photos. I was successful in applying a texture to the original pink lily image. But moving on to adding a mask I was having some difficulty after searching for tips on the web. I then resorted to Photoshop Elements "Help". It turns out there is a a grouping of textures and frames under the Quick choices. What you see is the use of both textures and frames. I use Elements and Nik in post processing but only the Expert and Guided modes. "Elements Texture" is to my liking but I will continue to check for a good tutorial on adding masks.
Any reference materials or suggestions are welcome. I would like to add masks in a more creative way rather than rely on a preset program.

Camera settings: f13 1/2 sec., ISO 400. With tripod and available light.

HI, PRISCILLA. I'M NOT FAMILIAR WITH "ELEMENTS TEXTURE" SO THERE IS NOTHING I CAN COMMENT ON OR SUGGEST. THIS RESPONSE WAS SOLELY TO LET YOU KNOW THAT I DID VIEW YOUR PHOTO. THANKS FOR BROADENING MY HORIZON AND I HOPE YOU HAVE SOME CREATIVE FUN!   Posted: 08/04/2020 01:22:19

Hi Pricilla
The color and texture of the flower is lovely. Well done. I also use Photoshop Elements and trying to learn more about layers, masks, and textures. I found that YouTube has excellent tutorials on everything. In particular "Leslie Nicole" videos on textures. Search YouTube for PSE topics on layers and mask too. It has helped me. There is so much to learn and it's fun.

Hi Barbara, Thanks for your helpful comment. With the Covid-19 restrictions I find it to be a good time to search out new options for photography. I have been in touch with Meredith Images at www.MeredithImages.com If you are on Facebook check out a group that is related to her. "Textures: Turn HO-Hum into a Work of Art". The group is devoted to textures; the images you will see are absolutely super.   Posted: 08/12/2020 15:57:43

Hi Priscilla: It is always fun to work with filters to see what effect each one has, some work well with certain subjects while others simply do not fit. If you are working with old wood sometime, try Poster Edges filter in Elements at its lowest setting.
This filter you have used on the Lily at least to me provides more of an old world painterly look, totally a different feeling and mood than the original.
I really like your pink original too, wonderful soft mood
and a fine example of selective focus in flower photography. You chose just the right background for your pink original as it fits very well. KUDOS on both efforts.

I really do like both the original and the creation. Adding a texture makes the image into an art form away from reality. I wish you luck in your search. There are so many subjects out in nature that make for good textures.   Posted: 08/07/2020 13:05:03

PRISCILLA, VERY NICE RENDITION, OF A REALLY NICE PHOTOGRAPH.

WE HAVE SEEN SEVERAL IMAGES OF FLOWERS FOCUSING IN ON THE STAMEN, AND ALL ARE DONE WELL,
THE LINES OF THE STEMS LEAD THE VIEWERS EYES TO THE STAMENS, EVERY DROPS OF POLLEN IS VERY SHARP, EVEN THE POLLEN DROPS ON THE PEDALS BELOW, THE RUBY RED ON THE PINK OFFER A LOT OF CONTRAST MAKING THE STAMENS POP OUT AT THE VIEWER.
IN MY OPINION, I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A LITTLE MORE ON THE LEFT TO SHOW WHERE ALL THOSE STEMS COME FROM.

YOUR CHOICE OF RENDERING IT WITH AS A PIECE OF FINE ART,IT
IS ALWAYS THE PHOTOGRAPHERS CHOICE. ALTHOUGH I LIKE THE ORIGINAL, I SEE WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND AS FAR AS IT GOES, ITS VERY ARTSY. ALL IN ALL YOU DID A GOOD JOB.
