About the Image(s)

DATA: Nikon D700 with 200mm Nikon macro on tripod --- ISO 500 --- 1/1000 @ f/9 --- soft gold reflector --- cloudy. Post processed in Elements.

Maker's Aims and Comments: The subject is gears of an old steam engine on display at a historical museum. Happened to see this interesting composition of gears and shafts, then the fact they were painted yellow really helped make the picture possible.

Nice subject, well placed with great color. Should you have cropped out the red gear at the top? I'm not sure. It's slightly distracting.   Posted: 06/07/2020 16:35:57

Hi Murphy, I like these types of subjects. Good color, clarity and lighting. The red at the top didn't bother me until I read Neal's comments. Then that was all I saw. But all and all, for me it's not a problem. Nice work.   Posted: 06/14/2020 18:36:58

Murphy, very interesting scene, like the diagonal line made up with the shaft coming through the middle of the two gears, like the guys commented the red is slightly distracting, cropping it out would bring that gear down in size (half a gear) like the one on the right, bringing better balance. but still a good eye to see the opportunity to capture this image.

Hi Murphy, Your image has my approval. The yellow against the black background is really outstanding. I can see just a hint of one gear behind another which creates subtle depth and interest. At first I did not see the bit of red at the top of the frame. That is until pointed out. What I did notice is the smaller yellow/orangy/brown gear in the center lower part of the frame. To me it looks as though it doesn't belong. I think it relates to the paint, too clean or perfect. My eye went there immediately. Otherwise, I think you have an interesting image.   Posted: 06/22/2020 18:55:41
