3 Bells by Murphy Hektner, APSA

August 2019 - 3 Bells

About the Image(s)

DATA: Nikon D700 with 200mm macro on tripod. ISO 1600 --- 1/60 @ f/8 --- fill flash at minus 3 stops --- cloudy, early morning.

Maker's Aims and Comments: I purchased a hanging basket of flowers at our local super market, this plant was one of the varieties growing in the basket and it trailed down over the sides of the container. The basket is hanging at the edge of our covered front porch ceiling Had been watching the growth process of the little bells and early one morning it was very calm as the daily wind not yet arrived, so set up my gear and made the photo. Even the very slightest of breezes would move those little flowers on that thread like stem.

Sharp, good composition, color contrast good. Might consider either lightening the shadow behind the middle flower or adding
shadow behind the other two. Consider light vignette. Great capture.   Posted: 08/07/2019 10:42:48

Hi Murphy, I enjoy you image just as is. All though a light vignette might be appropriate. I recently attended a week of Photoshop learning where the instructor highly emphasized adding a vignette to most images entered in competition. Fine focus, composition, lighting and interest are all present. Colors are complementary as well.   Posted: 08/12/2019 20:11:11

Hi Priscilla and Neal: Thanks for your positive comments on the 3 Bells. Guess I am not especially into vignette, so do not use it, however I have viewed certain types of images where it enhanced the overall presentation. For me, this image had an impact on me mainly because I have never seen a flower with those colors, and it made me curious to explore it further. I love the composition, which I found well balanced and the exposure was just right with the flowers' 'hairs' well defined. Also, I like the color range in the image, with the nice smooth green background against the colors of the main subject. Great job!   Posted: 08/17/2019 20:23:11
