Madrone Bark Design by Murphy Hektner, APSA

January 2018 - Madrone Bark Design

About the Image(s)

DATA: Photographed with Pentax K7 camera and Tamron 90mm macro lens on tripod. Exposure was ISO 100 -- 1 second at f/14. Lighting was cloudy bright; used a Photoflex soft-gold reflector to reflect a small amount of ambient light into the bark pattern.

Maker’s Aims and Comments: I like to photograph artistic designs in nature. The Madrone trees shed their bark in late summer sometimes forming interesting designs. The challenge is finding a nice design close enough to the ground where you can actually photograph it.

I love designs in nature like this and this image does a great job at being full of detail and having a 3D quality.

The image has sharpness and color and interest, perhaps add a slight vignette?   Posted: 01/09/2018 17:09:29

Hi Murphy, if you wouldn't have explained that this is a tree, I would have thought it was wood shavings from a planer. The Tamron lens does a great job. The lighting is nice and even. Good color and interest.   Posted: 01/11/2018 06:31:57

Great color with overall sharpness. The peeling bark against the smoothness of the wonderfully blended background is just eye catching. I love how the bark has formed an interesting composition; there is much to enjoy. I see softness in the "looped" patterns and brittleness in the vertical formations. I also like your composition, it flows downward from the upper left corner of the frame. Excellent!   Posted: 01/19/2018 14:04:10

The word in quotes should be Curled. However, the comment square will not accept it. ?????   Posted: 01/19/2018 14:28:07

Hi Murphy, as usual your image of the "Madrone Bark Design" is outstanding. I love the texture of the peeling bark against the smooth surface of the tree. The lighting on the bark creates wonderful areas of light and dark and the ing bark moves my eye through the frame. Great image!   Posted: 01/21/2018 14:10:17

Murphy, Bark looks almost artificial, it is so perfect. I like the good focus, the use of shadows and the color combination. Just a nice image.   Posted: 01/26/2018 06:57:52

I am glad you capture this very nice image. You do not provide the aperture information. However, it must be small to clearly show the texture of the bark and the whole area in focus.   Posted: 01/26/2018 17:37:01
