About the Image(s)

For more than 10 years, our whole family (more than 30 people): mother, brothers, nephews, children, grandchildren and close friends, every year at the end of the month of July we go on vacation to the Golan Heights in northern Israel.

The kibbutz has a playground (brand new) where I saw this tractor. Early in the morning at sunrise when the light was very warm I took this photo.

Your opinions?

I shoot in RAW format and process with Lightroom:
basic adjustment, detail, texture, etc.

Then I convert to B&W in Photoshop.

Blend a Multiply layer with 21% opacity around the tractor, another Multiply layer with 34% opacity on the tractor itself.
I added a little sharpness on the tractor.

Camera settings: Sony a7r III. ISO 250, 1/400s, f/6.3, 58mm, lens: Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM.

Israel, I REALLY love this image. It captures the feeling of history. The tractor was a fantastic "find". Your family vacation together sounds like a tradition that will be rich throughout the lives of the children, grandchildren, etc. I can't think of a more valuable gift.

Your post-processing is well done, providing excellent tones. And the composition of the photograph is wonderful.

As with many of the photographs that I like, I played with yours in Photoshop and Camera Raw. I changed the lighting a bit to emphasize the tractor and added a bit of "space" in front and below the tractor. I was hoping to give it some room to move forward. Your thoughts?

Pete,
Your suggestions and your vision are always incomparable and this time too.
You taught me something new again.
I agree with your correction.

Thank you very much.

Israel, I'm always happy to share my thoughts. But, it's your opinion that really matters.

I find that the comments and suggestions from you and others in our study group often (but not always) leads me to reevaluate and change my initial thoughts. For me, this is a tremendous learning experience. Thank you!   Posted: 11/01/2020 12:12:31

Hello Israel,

I love Israel's flag on this steam roller machine! Great image very unique and original.

I too tried my hand at a fun edit. I am experimenting with Silver Efex too. I like the film textures you can add so I used Agfa Scala 200x, I added a white frame vignette, and a small border. The vehicle has great character and I am sure it brought a chuckle to Oliver's face.

Best wishes,

Hello LuAnn,

I'm delighted with your changes.
I really like.
I'll definitely use your and Oliver's ideas.
I'm currently participating on a voluntary basis in a project of a leading Israeli photographer.
He is a retired military officer and he organized a group of amateur photographers.
At this time, because of the crown, the parents of the soldiers are not allowed to visit them at the bases.
Young soldiers finish their courses and make a night march 40 kilometers from 2 am in the desert or in the rain in northern Israel.
After the march of the throw, the young fighters took the oath.
I already took part in one photo session.
It was very touching and very emotional.
Our photos were sent to the soldiers and their families.
Usually the parents get involved, but not now.
I posted some of the photos on my Facebook page.
I'm interested in your opinion.

Best wishes,

Israel, that's wonderful volunteer work that you're doing! I'm sure that your photographs are extremely meaningful to the soldiers and their families. And, what's more, they will remain as valuable keepsakes in the years ahead.

Israel, A beautiful fun image of old equipment and kudos to the artist that did the art painting and flag decorating. I'm not bothered about the space in front of the "roller" and think that the cropping/composition if perfect. I do agree with the increased exposure, especially in the shadows. I would also suggest increasing the textures and clarity to bring out the details on the front (ie: name plate area). Sorry, can't comment on your Facebook images. I'm not on Facebook.   Posted: 11/11/2020 21:43:28

Israel. What a Fantastic job you did with this project. Posed to action, smiles to game faces. These men are not actors, they are the real deals and by the smiles on their faces I can tell that they were most appreciate of you taking the photos. Perfect flat lighting for this type of work, great exposure & or your PP, I have a lot more respect for you as a photojournalist, as I had not seen this type of work by you.
You should be so proud of this work.
Best Wishes

Bob,
I'm grateful to you for the appreciation of my photos.
It was very emotional, this is my small contribution to the great work these 18 year old boys are doing.
On their shoulders is a great responsibility - the defense of the Motherland.
Photos of mine and my friends brought joy to these young guys and their families.
We received a lot of plug-in gifts from soldiers and their parents.
I'm really proud of my photos.

All the best to you and your family.
