About the Image(s)

While strolling through a local park a few years ago, I was entranced by the shadows cast by a railing over rocks and sand. It's about the patterns. In color, it is really very monocrhome, but the black and white version provides more contrast and interest, I think.

Leah,

Your image does indeed have a nice shadow pattern. You might think about going out to look for shadow pattern created by fences, trees etc for a photo project.

Thanks, Emil,
I like the idea of a photo project based on shadows and shadow patterns! Thanks for the suggestion   Posted: 08/08/2020 10:37:01

Hi Leah,

Great project idea, photographing shadows of different elements.

I get the sense from looking at this image, that the perspective is off. I also see more elements in the image than are necessary to tell this story of the big rock and its shadow.

Check out my sample edit and tell me what you think.

Best regards,
LuAnn

Thanks, LuAnn, I felt something wasn't right and i think I played with the crop but nothing seemed right. I appreciate the suggestion. Since the shadows are the thing, maybe it doesn't matter if you can tell if it's a rock? i tried another version - see what you think.   Posted: 08/08/2020 17:05:57

I have always liked your simplicity in subject matter Leah. The viewer generally doesn't have to guess what is what, and yet you manage to bring off a uniqueness or abstraction about it; similar to the piano keys or flame of knowledge images. At least that is the way it appears to me. I do like the darker vignette putting more concentration on your subject, but in my estimation, you perhaps cropped a little too tight with your second attempt. Great subject once again.   Posted: 08/10/2020 14:05:30

Leah, great job in seeing the image and pattern. I think your original crop was not tight enough (no need for the 2nd rock and wall) and that your 2nd crop was too tight and it doesn't seem to show the shape (rounded corners) and makes it more difficult to grasp.   Posted: 08/10/2020 16:04:46
