Joker by Manfred Mueller

August 2019 - Joker

About the Image(s)

This is an image I took a couple of weeks ago at another cosplay shoot in an old abandoned industrial site. This is the Joker from the DC Comics Batman series.

I had a single 1.2m / 55" deep octabox that was lit by a Godox Witstro AD-360 bare bulb flash as my light source.

I love this Photo; he scares me but the shot is well made. Maybe the bar in back of his head distracts me a bit.   Posted: 08/03/2019 20:29:25

Thanks Donna - It's actually not a bar, but his cane that he swung behind his back. I'm getting mixed comments on this. Some people love it and others think I should remove it.   Posted: 08/04/2019 14:52:48

Very nice lighting and your model did a good job. I do think that the background is a little distracting, especially the bar that runs diagonally in the back of his neck. After I wrote this I looked up at Donna's comments and it seems we agree.   Posted: 08/04/2019 18:06:54

Thanks for the comments Jim. It looks like I will work on a version without the cane in the shot. This was a location shot in an old abandoned building, not a studio shot, so the "ambiance" of the background does cause some issues.   Posted: 08/04/2019 19:19:53

Very impactant portrait, the fixed view to the camera, the wide and malicious smile... I have recogniced the cane and I think is a good complement for a menacing subject. Green hair, green eyes make up, green eyes, very consistent image, the model was working well in his cosplay realism. Jacket with a violet lining is also a plus for mi. The little part visible of the room cold be darkened to reinforze still more this Comics character.   Posted: 08/07/2019 12:40:40

Updated with the cane behind his neck removed.   Posted: 08/16/2019 10:25:54

Fantastic portrait of the Joker. After you removed the cane behind the Joker's head, your image when from very good to excellent. Congrats on the successful portrait with great lighting.   Posted: 08/24/2019 10:11:52

Hi Manfred
I so love your portrait of the Joker a character I photographed many times myself as I cover a lot of Cosplay events and I have been an official photographer at quite a few major Comicons I was going to suggest totally darkening the background which is an effect I often use and so makes the character stand out and would just take those lighter markings out at the top of the image as for the Joker himself great job and keep doing these shoots they are so much fun.   Posted: 08/28/2019 16:48:18

Thanks Ian, but my intent was more along the lines of an environmental portrait, rather than a studio portrait shot against black seamless.

What I am trying to end up is more of a fine art view than a traditional cosplay portrait.
