About the Image(s)

This is picture is special to me because this is the first studio portrait clicked by me. And I wanted my first portrait to be that of my teacher, as he smokes a lot so first thing my came to my mind was to try something out with smoke and as his face looks photogenic and I asked him to wear a fedora which gave my picture a vintage look.

Camera – Canon 1200D
Aperture – f/8
Shutter - 1/125
ISO – 100
Lens – 55-250mm( at 60mm)

As a first studio portrait, this is very well done. You have done a great job giving the viewer an insight into the character of your subject.

The lighting is quite dramatic and along with the smoke and the hat, you have done a lot to tell us things about your teacher. B&W works well, as it often does in portraiture.

The only thing I would have liked to have seen is a bit more separation of the subject from the background on the camera right side. A hint of rim lighting would have given you an even stronger image.

Very good!!! Black and white is the perfect choice. The black and white processing is excellent.

The placement of the smoke is perfect. It looks like the ash is just about to fall off the cigarette. You paid good attention to details and that's so important in portraiture.   Posted: 10/20/2018 10:19:53

I really like your monochrome rendition of this portrait. A very good image and it is hard to believe this was your first studio portrait. The lighting models the facial features very well while accenting the smoke. Keep up the great work.   Posted: 10/24/2018 21:05:33

Thank you all for the compliments and suggestions. I actually had never clicked in a studio before this photo so before clciking this portrait my teacher taught me about all the types of lighting, he didn't let me use lighting before understanding them so this picture was more of a test for me that if i know lighting or not.   Posted: 10/29/2018 00:58:33
