Susanna and Rose Petals by Jim Mahoney, APSA, EPSA

June 2018 - Susanna and Rose Petals

About the Image(s)

This photograph is from my second shoot with Susanna. The idea was to create an implied image using the rose petals. We had previously purchased the pink fabric and it seemed to work well for this picture. The pink rose petals came from the Family Dollar Store. Susanna laid down on the fabric and she and my wife strategically arranged the rose petals. We tried a number of different positions for her hand until we found one we liked. The main light was aimed downward and placed to Susanna's left. I placed a fill light at her feet and aimed it at her midsection to fill in any deep shadows. The lighting came from my Alien Bees equipped with softboxes. I used my Canon 60D and Canon 28-80mm zoom lens.

Well, this is a definitely stunning image that proudly represents the implied fine art nude genre, and will serve as a great inspiration for more than one of my future photography projects. First of all, it is carefully posed and flatteringly lit. The model had the time to develop confidence in the photographer, the relaxed position and subtle smile of Susanna says it all. A careful examination reveals the secrets of taking a great picture on a budget for all of us who find our passion in photography occassionally unaffordable. I love the intensity of the catchlights and the smoothness of the model's skin while clarity and sharpness have not been compromised at all. Myself would be tempted though to retouch some if not all of her skin imperfections like in her armpit and hand. I am looking forward to looking at more of your images in the near future.   Posted: 06/01/2018 16:07:39

Another well executed image, Jim.

The model, the lighting and the combination of the fabric and petals all flow together very nicely. I don't particularly like what the frame is doing for the image; the top left and bottom left are just a bit too distracting for my taste.   Posted: 06/03/2018 23:08:31

I find excellent the pose with the hand near her face, it is giving some innocence to the image.
Details are so correct, shadows a little dark, her left arm is almost disappearing. Maybe some reinforcement on shadows filling would give some help.

Jim, nice image. A very good pose and I agree with you on the hand placement. The fabric and rose pedals work great with the model to create an excellent implied image. Beautiful model, so I hope you can continue to work with her.   Posted: 06/24/2018 22:09:22
