About the Image(s)

A few weeks ago I purchased a small lightbox to help a talented friend take some pictures of his pottery for a marketing publication. After we had finished, I grabbed a few items lying around the kitchen to produce a still life. The image was taken with my Sony A7R IV with a 24 - 105 Sony zoom; 1/6, f/11, ISO 100 on a tripod. I cropped in and increased the overall exposure a bit and then selectively lightened and/or increased clarity and/or saturation in various areas of the image with radial filters. I purposely left the labels on the tomatoes to produce a bit of dissonance and asymmetry. It seems unlikely that I will make a living doing production images.

Nice color harmony to me. Composition seems balanced to my eye. Good job on keeping specular hi lights down on the metallic stuff. Did you put a vignette in, or was that just the lighting pattern? Nice, soft lighting compliments the subjects I think.

I think the crop is a little tight on the right, but given your nice, seamless background, that could easily be fixed in Photoshop by cropping out, and then doing a content aware fill. Easy Peasy...but you probably knew that.

This is just me talking' but I like still life. Your ability to control everything (or at least a lot) gives you the ability to manicure your images. I learned a lot about artificial lighting by working on stills. Anyway, don't give up on them yet.   Posted: 03/07/2023 21:30:35

I really enjoy the colors of your piece. The lighting is soft and it seems inviting. The text draws my eye to the right side and the bananas curve also brings me nicely to the tomato.   Posted: 03/10/2023 05:19:49

I need to do more of this kind of still life. Nice balance for me throughout. The only thing that keeps catching my eye is the little tag on the side of the tomato. Other than removing that all is good. The big tag I like. Gives me some information to look at.   Posted: 03/10/2023 14:46:13

I like your triangular composition, it's simple but effective. The colors are true to life. I like the use of the background is it a gradient or is that vignetting, nicely done it keeps me centered. Good use of radial filters and underrated tool in lightroom that I will definitely explore more. Well done!   Posted: 03/11/2023 03:50:04

This is so unlike your landscape photography! I love the composition and the colors. I don't like the labels, but I understand you intentionally left them on. The radial filters work really well here, instead of a vinette? Having been out photographing bluebonnets and poppies blowing in the wind, a nice still life is comforting to view. What about doing one with just the most beautiful fruit you can find in season?   Posted: 03/16/2023 18:59:28

Yes, still life is not my usual thing. Probably won't be seeing many more. Just a whim.   Posted: 03/18/2023 21:57:04
