Yellow Orange Edge Rose Center by Denise McKay

January 2020 - Yellow Orange Edge Rose Center

About the Image(s)

My January photo is a yellow rose with bright orange on the edges. Taken indoors using an LED light bulb as my light source, diffused with a white umbrella. I positioned the light to one side and used a white foam core board on the opposite side to reflect light back on the rose. I took this with my Sony A7R III and a Lensbaby Velvet 56 lens. This lens lets you focus super close, like a macro lens. I had my camera on a tripod as this is a manual focus lens and I definitely needed the stability.

Settings were f 16, 2.0 sec shutter speed, ISO 200. I used Lightroom for post processing and did crop in a little. I increased overall exposure just a tad, and increased clarity and texture just a little. I also removed a couple of spots I found distracting.

Oh Denise, you are the next Georgia O'Keefe! There isn't a thing I would change about this, and it is definitely competition-worthy! Your image evokes a very pleasant mood for me in viewing it; the colors work well together without being too harsh. The detail is subtle but definitely there to see. And your crop and perspective is breathtakingly beautiful to me!   Posted: 01/07/2020 13:40:52

Oh goodness Carol! Thank you so much for the compliment! I have worked very hard on improving my compositions, controlling the light, and post-processing of my flower photography. The subject matter really speaks to me,and I enjoy finding just the right specimen to work with. I sometimes wait days for the flowers I choose to bloom (or not) in a way that really captures my eye.

I appreciate your comments and kind words!   Posted: 01/07/2020 17:34:56

Hi Denise,

Superb! Sharpness, complimentary flowing colors, composition, grace, and peace are all rolled up in this single image The only thing I would change is the title - "A Peaceful Easy Feeling".

Good thoughts for 2020!

Fantastic Denise. I agree with Carol, wouldn't change a thing. The composition and lighting are great; you have a good eye. Your patience paid off, the center is open enough to allow detail and luminosity to show. Well done !   Posted: 01/10/2020 11:25:51

Really nice shot of a rose. The center seems just a bit softer than other pedals. Very minor. Great job!   Posted: 01/12/2020 21:27:42

The center was more in shadow and I think that made the focus a bit harder to nail. But I also didn't think it was so drastic that it took away from the entire shot. :)

WOW! I'll bet your soft pastel version is also a winner? Add me to the "don't change anything" gang.   Posted: 01/13/2020 12:25:41
