October 2018 - Flower from Garden

About the Image(s)

I went out early to try to catch the soft dew on one of my roses. I used natural light but had the camera on a tripod and took about 6 shots and then photo stacked the images in PS. I used my Canon 5D mark 111 with a Canon 100 ml Macro lens. I had the ISO at 100 the F stop at F8 and the speed was 1/15th of a second on most of the shots. (on some it went down to 1/13th of a second)

What a pretty flower (rose)! I wonder if you had moved a little more to your left if you could have blocked some of the errant pedals. I don't know much about "stacking" but that may be what caused the softness to your image. This is a nice image and I like the camera angle to the rose and feel the dark background really brings an emphasis to the flower. Nice job and another enjoyable image!   Posted: 10/05/2018 13:51:29

Great job, Nadia! The dewdrops and the striations on the rose make me want to lean in and smell it! My only suggestion would be that it seems to be pushed out on the right side, with some negative space on the left that makes it feel unbalanced to me. I would love to see the same space on the right side, along with the missing petal pieces. But in lieu of this, I don't know that cropping the left side would be the way to go, either. Anyway, beautiful job of focus stacking, and a lovely capture of the rose's center!!   Posted: 10/06/2018 21:15:28

You've captured what I consider is a fragile quality of the rose - although it just may be the dew balancing on the tips of the petals. Is this, perhaps, one of those pictures that could correctly be centrally placed? Great color and focus. I'd love to have these in my garden.   Posted: 10/09/2018 12:49:02

Thanks Will - I have 14 of these rose bushes and they are in the shape of small standards. Their colour is called 'Blush'. They are looking great now that is it spring over here. As for the image I might have to consider changing the crop. cheers   Posted: 10/09/2018 13:34:42

Wow, Nadia, great image. Well done with the focus stacking; something I've wanted to try. Love the color and even placement of the dew drops. I understand what folks are saying about the outer edges. I'm assuming you took this as a RAW file. So you should have some room to crop - maybe a square crop. Bring us closer to the middle of the flower; I know it would change what you had in mind for the composition but would be interested in seeing a side by side comparison. "Blush", perfect color description; you must have a green thumb as well as a photographers eye.   Posted: 10/11/2018 16:57:12

Thanks Bob - will actually work on the crop as I do have lots of room around the rose in the original capture - and yes I love my garden. cheers   Posted: 10/11/2018 17:44:16
