Amaryllis - Stigma and Stamen by Bill Provost

January 2018 - Amaryllis - Stigma and Stamen

About the Image(s)

This photo was taken with a Nikon D800. Lens 60mm Macro f2.8. Lens: Exposure 1/6 Sec, f 3.5, ISO 2500. The camera was mounted on a tripod with a cable release. I adjusted the overhead light by shielding the source. The flower is an Amaryllis indoor plant. I focused on the stigma and stamen for this macro image. I set up several shots and thought this one was the best for a macro shot. I finished by adjusted the size of the image. There is very little adjustments to the photo.

The stamen (?) and Pistals (?) feel like they are floating...and they also feel crystal clear, with great contrast between the background of the flower and the front plane. I like that you have the petal on the left side in focus, too; it just feels right to me. The crop lends itself well to the image, but I must admit that I can't tell where the black ended, so I assumed it left just a bit of space to the right of the image. Not too crowded feeling for me; just right. And a lush red besides! Good job!   Posted: 01/09/2018 13:53:25

This image was shot against a black cloth. It happens that the screen on this site is also black creating some confusion. I use the black backdrop on a lot of my macros. The right side (looking at the image) has about an inch that leads into the photo. Maybe this will clarify the set up some. Thanks for the kind words!   Posted: 01/10/2018 16:48:36

At first quick glance I thought the anthers were flying insects (and I haven't had my nightcap yet). As Carol said, they do appear to be floating. That aspect is enhanced by to open black space on the right; very nice composition. The DOF you achieved is perfect for this image. Very nice, Bill!   Posted: 01/09/2018 20:44:31

When I first opened this I thought I was looking at out-of-focus bees hovering. Like the composition and the optical illusion you created.   Posted: 01/29/2018 10:40:57

I took the liberty of trying a little different crop on this. I really liked that your focus was obviously on the anthers of the stamen, and since they were floating I wanted to pull them more into the picture. I like the color contrast as well and thought this just made them stand out a bit more. Great concept.
