I HEART YOU by Carol Sheppard

July 2017 - I HEART YOU

About the Image(s)

This was taken in a garden; I was looking for interesting patterns in the plants and came across this. The settings were 100mm Macro lens, tripod, Canon 50d, ISO 640, F11 and .6 secs. I used Color Efex to adjust the contrast locally, did some spot removal, and pulled out a bit of detail. I also warmed it up a bit in tone but reduced the yellow and green saturation as it looked almost fake it was so bright.

An interesting photo. The line or vane from the front leaf leads the eye into the rest of the image. There seems to have good balance. I don't know if it was your intent but the focus seems to be a little soft. Some of the detail at the bottom of the image might have been able to do without. An interesting image as presented.   Posted: 07/14/2017 18:12:53

This plant reminds me of an Egyptian Onion, something I photographed about a year ago at Longwood Gardens? With the exception of the center-right, the image appears OOF to me. I like the lines and curves, and I think your title for the image is the right deor.   Posted: 07/19/2017 16:42:18

You know, I think you are both right about the focus. At the time, I was learning from a Macro photographer whose signature is focusing on little interesting parts of plants with a dreamy quality--and I always thought they looked a little out of focus, so that is probably right!!

The symmetry of your image is very appealing and the background color & bokeh add to its appeal. At f11, I would have thought you'd have more DOF. Agree with both of Bill P's comments re focus and cropping the bottom (about 1/3 or enough to eliminate most of the green 'bump' on the right of the main vein. Since you used a tripod and the focus is still soft, my guess is this was outdoors and there was a slight breeze, which at .6 second exposure, would impact focus. Seemed like a long exposure?   Posted: 07/22/2017 14:19:44
