Title: Back on the Pitch

Hi! I'm back!

Soccer season has experienced quite a few delays in my area. This was the first game my daughter played since November, and I believe she only had two practices. I wanted to highlight the size differences in the teams. My daughter (in the front) is playing on a U14 team, but she just turned 12. The player behind her is just that much taller, and probably closer to 14. I had to abide by the field rules, which included distancing myself from other families and standing behind the chainlink fence. The game was at 10:45, this was taken slightly after 11:00, so not the best for lightning.

I tried to pull down the highlights down and saturate the greens in Lightroom. Also, I think my lens was a bit too much for this field. I probably could have used a different telephoto lens. Any tips for improvement are appreciated.

Hi, Brenda, glad you're back. You've picked a good clip of the original. The difference in size and the age of the kids are clearly visible in the photo. The flowing hair of your daughter gives the photo a special touch. That the light situation was not optimal, you can't help that. I think the zoom 100 - 400 mm is a good focal length for soccer. With a faster lens, e.g. 70 - 200 mm f2.8 you can blur the background with open aperture, but then you will miss some focal length for distant game scenes.
It's nice that in the United States of America amateur soccer is possible again with conditions, in Germany only the professionals of the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga are allowed to play without spectators, unfortunately not yet an amateur sport.

Funny you should mention that we are allowed to play...for this particular game, we had to jump state lines because my home state was allowing baseball but not soccer.

Thank you for your feedback, I appreciate it!   Posted: 08/04/2020 09:08:52

Good action. I would get lower by kneeling, making the players look more heroic, and emphasizing player height difference... or if there were bleachers, get much higher and shoot down, using the great shadows... although that would require a longer lens.   Posted: 08/03/2020 14:58:37

Diane, I absolutely agree with you that this would have been better if I were lower. I was bummed I had all these rules to adhere to and couldn't just practice all the suggestions you all have given me over the past months.   Posted: 08/04/2020 09:15:20
