Paragliding over the Palouse by Gerald Emmerich Jr, HonFPSA, GMPSA/P

November 2019 - Paragliding over the Palouse

About the Image(s)

My photo for this month was taken in 2012 on the way home to Wisconsin from the 2012 PSA Conference in San Francisco. We stopped at Steptoe Butte in eastern Washington state for sunrise pictures, and there were several paragliders soaring over the butte against the backdrop of the Palouse. The camera and lens info is Canon 50D, 24-105mm zoom at 67mm, ISO 320, f/7.1, 1/1000 sec.

I’m not sure how “sporty” this image is. (The image has been “retired” from Photo Travel exhibitions.) What do you think “ is it acceptable in a PJ or PJ Sports international exhibition?

Gerald, Your image would certainly be acceptalbe for PJ. Not every day you get to see a paraglider and the Palouse together. Bruce   Posted: 11/12/2019 20:36:41

I think this works as a sports photo. It's sharp, and the paraglider is in the right place. I am not sure the background is right, tho. I am drawn to the lighter space at the bottom, rather than where the glider is.   Posted: 11/13/2019 01:26:16

Wow ......most impressive . The scenery is fabulous by itself but the addition of the paraglider really makes it fantastic   Posted: 11/16/2019 15:46:38

Fantastic shot that should get an accept but do you think you need to crop to enlarge the paraglider which I expect is sharp. I'm thinking that with the speed of some competitions, some judges may not see the paraglider or see the Palouse as the star. I'd still give it a try. See attached.   Posted: 11/19/2019 16:18:23

The contours of the land and the lighting make for an effective image.

I like that you've placed the para glider in the upper right intersection of the rule of thirds.

This image indeed would be very effective in photo travel. I think though the results would be more varied in PJ ... perhaps only because the para glider doesn't take up a significant portion of the composition?   Posted: 11/30/2019 11:43:11
