Two Wind Surfers by Gerald Emmerich Jr, HonFPSA, GMPSA/P

October 2018 - Two Wind Surfers

About the Image(s)

My wife and I are in Salt Lake City for the 2018 PSA Conference, which starts September 30. My photo for this month was taken a couple months ago along the Columbia River in the city of Hood River, OR. As I mentioned with the rafting image in July, I was one of the assessors for the PSA Portfolio Program in Vancouver, WA. We reviewed 82 portfolios over three days. After the assessments, we took a few days to do some shooting.

The City of Hood River, Oregon on the Columbia River is known to attract dozens of wind surfers, even more when it’s really windy. Unfortunately for us, we were there on a relatively calm day, so we did not have a lot of drama – no flips, no big air. But there were about 10-15 wind surfers and lots of colorful sails.

My camera is a Canon 7D Mark II (1.6 crop sensor), and the lens is the Canon 100-400mm zoom lens at 400mm. The settings were f:8, ISO 800, at 1/1250 sec.

I’m not sure if the action in this photo would be competitive in PJ sports exhibitions. What do you think – is this photo is good enough for acceptance?

No idea on acceptance. Wind surfer shots I usually see are acrobatic in nature and one surfer. Not aware of any wind surfer contests but would expect you might see on West Coast.   Posted: 10/09/2018 21:19:03

Gerald, I love the 7D II and 100-400 combination. Every thing is good technically, however some action would make it more likely to be accepted.Bruce   Posted: 10/23/2018 19:16:07

I really like the position of the two wind surfers and the bright yellow sail on the left compared to the darker black of the right sail. The trailing white foam behind both boards does give some sense of action ... yet, it might not be enough for this image to be accepted consistently in PSA PJ. I'd be more inclined to submit this image to PID instead.
