Nice capture. The expressions (and beards x 3) work well together. All the dirt really adds to the atmosphere. I think the B&W works a little better and you could add more clarity/contrast to the B&W to make it even grittier.

The cut off bodies and the runners leg are not optimal, but you have to shoot what is in front of you. Also if this is submitted to open/general you could clone out the background items a bit to focus attention on the people.

Overall a strong image, but not a super strong one. I really want to know what happened next. Was this shot in a burst? Seems like the next 2-3 in a burst may have isolated the 3 players more from the scrum and caught a bigger peak in the action.   Posted: 01/02/2018 15:01:41

I agree with Bob that the black and white is better. Love the intensity on the faces and the headlock on the guy in back. The mud reminds me of many soccer games here in Seattle, and really adds to the image. I also agree with Bob that this is a strong image but composition keeps it from being great.   Posted: 01/02/2018 21:55:36

I like the facial expressions and the dirt, either the mono or color works for me. The only thing that bothers me is that the image is crooked. The post and the white boundary marker are crooked, I would try to keep the boundary marker horizontal. Just nitpicking, but it makes a difference.   Posted: 01/09/2018 10:59:04

I think the strong elements are the facial expressions, the three beards, and the mud, all working together to tell what I think is a typical rugby story. I like both the color and the black and white, though the feel is very different. I don't particularly like the fact that the ball carrier is cut off, and I agree that straightening the image would help.   Posted: 01/29/2018 00:02:04

Thanks all. FYI the right border fuzzy area is the goal post. Agree on the foot but was not in the frame   Posted: 01/29/2018 12:37:19

I guess that I'd also chose the monochrome over the color version of this image.

I like the details of the ball carrier ... all the mud ... and the two players chasing on the right.

I also think that this image is just before the peak of the action. I wonder what happened when the ball carrier was tackled. I've never had the opportunity to photograph rugby ... I'm sure that it's not easy!   Posted: 01/30/2018 18:24:13
