About the Image(s)

While visiting in Portugal last year, we took a day trip to the Pena Castle in Sintra where I saw this group of children. I liked their playfulness (significantly cropped from a larger image with 4 girls and 2 adults) and took only one a single shot. I debated whether to include 3 children instead of 2 but opted for the two most expressive little girls.

Olympus OMD EM1-MII; 1/400 sec; f 4.0; ISO 1600; 14 mm (cropped 2x sensor). Processed in LR and Topaz DeNoise and Sharpen.

Bruce, I visited Pena Castle in Sintra a long time ago. I was more interested in the outside architecture, windows and doors. I think you cropped too much information. The presence of the girls, each on a pillar, adds interest and equilibrium to the image. I took a different approach than you, I cropped so three (odd number) are present in the frame, each one doing something different. Using the geometry correction sliders in ACR I made the pillars straight, then did a few adjustments in Lightroom for light and contrast. Added a stroke to keep the same presentation.   Posted: 02/09/2021 19:42:38

Thank you all for your comments/edits. This is how I learn! I redid the photo in LR with the three children and some simple noise reduction in Topaz and now have an image that is much improved. B   Posted: 02/18/2021 09:21:04

Bruce, I am glad you shared the original image with us. I agree with Isaac's edits and post processing. The rule of "odds" prevail and make the composition more balanced in my opinion. Including the 3rd girl also has the effect of including the entire door in the background, which would give an added sense of depth. These ancient places always have fascinating architecture and the young children at play brings life to an otherwise old place.   Posted: 02/17/2021 12:28:59

Bruce, I agree with Isaac and Gloria's comments as the three subjects balance the picture and the background door helps connect the girls and columns to the building.   Posted: 02/17/2021 20:31:59

Very nice eye Bruce!
The photo is just attractive. The light the colors and the composition, all are really good. I liked the tiny shadow of the column on the wall, it gives a little nice depth to the photo. Issac's idea is really making it more joyful.
Well done!   Posted: 02/21/2021 10:08:58

Children playing are a rewarding subject, but not easy to photograph. This worked wonderfully well here. Isaac's cutout is very justified. A highly balanced and dynamic image, beautiful work.   Posted: 02/22/2021 06:24:53
