CD Close Up by Nelson Charette

February 2021 - CD Close Up

About the Image(s)

I still have not been able to get out and shoot much, so I thought I would go look around the house and try shooting some macro with my Nikon d5100 Ir camera. Shot at ISO 500 1/100 sec. I found an old Nikon 55mm film lens and PK extension ring adapter and just started looking for things. I found this old mangled up CD laying around and tried shooting the back, I like the way the old lines looked.
Processed with Capture One 20, and Photoshop 2021.

Cool abstract image. Before I read your title, I though maybe it was a tire tread. At closer look, you do get more of that metallic effect. I'm not sure if so much blur on the bottom works for me. I would either crop it in a bit or try to get more of it in focus.   Posted: 02/10/2021 12:52:14

Hi Nelson - good creative capture.
Like Jessica, I would like to see slightly more of the image in focus - which could easily be achieved with a tighter crop.
Your choice of black and white is good, as it leaves an air of mystery.   Posted: 02/10/2021 13:54:30

I too, at first look thought of an old tire. Would have never guess that a CD could have so many cracks, but then, maybe that's why they skip so often, ha. For sure, monochrome works great for this shot. I like your creative, abstract approach. You didn't say what your f stop was but as Jessica mentioned, the out of focus areas, esp. on the bottom are distracting, also because of there lighter tones, pulls the viewer towards them. I agree a tighter crop might help, also a vignette may also help here to darken those white areas. Have you tried some of the Capture One preset/film looks that they include. Might give you some cool variations on your abstract image.   Posted: 02/12/2021 16:02:05

Very creative and unexpected! You have a good range of tones. Like the others said, I would like to see more of the frame in focus, especially the foreground.   Posted: 02/15/2021 16:06:21

I, too, thought it was a tire. Black and white suits the image. I like the lines especially because they are curved but I would have liked the foreground to have been sharp.   Posted: 02/16/2021 21:13:58
