Trunk Latch by Cindy Lynch

February 2021 - Trunk Latch

About the Image(s)

I was fascinated by the textures of this old trunk and decided to take some close up shots of its details. I also liked the subtle tones and shapes and the repetition of he round brads throughout the image. I opened the raw file in Camera Raw; reduced the noise (from such a high ISO “ set on automatic in a basement with no natural light), adjusted the clarity and exposure. I also used Nik Color Efex Detail Enhancer and Darken/Lighten Center. Settings: f/8, 1/60 sec., ISO 66400 and 60 mm focal length.

For a moment, before reading your description, I almost thought it was a huge ladies handbag. It is a lovely image I took it into Topaz Studio 2 and sharpened it just a tad and then chose their suggestion for "a touch of the dramatic" to "pump it up just a bit? Actually looking at them together, they seem almost identical. I like it either way.   Posted: 02/04/2021 09:16:40

The mixture of textures int he image is amazing. The image is really crisp. I am wondering what it would look like if you pulled back slightly on the darker tones. I would leave them around the edge, but the darkness seems a little too much toward the middle.   Posted: 02/10/2021 12:50:29

Hi Cindy - I love your image and your processing of it. You have left the points of interest to stand out and it leaves me to wonder about the story behind the image. Well done :)   Posted: 02/10/2021 13:52:08

Hi Cindy. Nice capture and good detail considering how dark it was and the high ISO. Luv the subject matter too, I can't seem to pass up and old suitcase/truck without taking a bunch of shots. I just recently took advantage of a sale that Topaz has on their Denoise AI, it does an amazing job on noise reduction. Worth a look if you want to add one more tool to the box. The only nit-pic I would make is maybe to straighten the image a little; might not be possible if it throws you latch out of wack.   Posted: 02/12/2021 15:41:47

I need to try my "Auto." It is amazing that it did so well. The composition is well balanced and sharp. I like the small details and repetition of brads throughout. Wondered how it would look in black and white. Am not sure which one I like better -- the color might be better because it is unusual.   Posted: 02/16/2021 21:06:20

Great subject with seasoning. Try a few shots at an angle to capture dimensions. The cutoff on the lower right probably could not be avoided. The latch alone would make a good story.   Posted: 02/28/2021 15:53:10
