About the Image(s)

I shot this event from Augusta, GA, in late July of 2014 (Think hot and humid) on the Savannah River against the backdrop of big houses in North Augusta, SC, across the river. I used my Canon EOS 30D and I find that 1/640 sec. works best for sports action shots, in shutter priority, f/10, ISO 400, focal length 39mm, no flash (taken just after noon.)

Since the drama of the rooster tails of water spraying out the back of the boats created the most excitement, I darkened the row of houses in Photoshop. The Topaz Impressions "Cave Dweller I" filter gave the water a bit of warmth and made it look the most like a painting, while maintaining the action.

I love the effect of your painting choices for this image. You've added drama, depth and texture and excellently enhanced the original. And it was a good choice to darken out the houses. The yellow boat now seems clearer/sharper than the red boat; in the original both seemed to have equal weight. If possible, my preference would be to remove a "very small" amount of the "Cave Dweller" filter from the red boat. Then, I think my eyes would travel from the red boat to the yellow boat, then to the rooster tails and back again. Kudos for seeing this as a painting. Very artistic result.   Posted: 10/07/2020 12:17:07

Your decisions on art treatment added to the image and brings an interest to the image. Focusing on just the boats and spray add to the image and keeps my eye on your main interest of the "Rooster Tails". To my eye, I feel there needs to be room for the boats to move into and so I added more to the right and did a different crop. While I am not always caught up on rule of thirds, with a tighter crop the two boats end up in the power points using rule of thirds. Just an idea.   Posted: 10/22/2020 00:17:44

I think I like what you did with it, Nancy. They did need extra space for their speed racing. I hadn't thought of adding any, although I usually consider space in front when cropping.   Posted: 10/23/2020 13:53:22

This image is very cool and I love the "action" of it. Your choice of Cave Dweller was very appropriate and I agree with Nancy's addition of space at right. The contrasts of light within the image are also very good.   Posted: 10/22/2020 09:21:00
